Former Celtics guard taken No. 1 overall in G League draft

Former Celtics guard Matt Ryan received interest in free agency as the Knicks potentially wanted to sign the veteran guard. But instead, Ryan was selected No. 1 overall by the Westchester Knicks in the annual G League draft.

However, that doesn't mean the Knicks control his NBA rights, as any team is free to sign the 27-year-old guard. But it does allow the New York organization to take a closer look at Ryan to see if they want to promote him to the roster at some point this season. Ryan has drawn interest from the Knicks because they need to supplement the rest of their roster.

Ryan was originally with the Pelicans and, among other things, signed a restructured contract. But New Orleans waived him and made him a free agent. One of Ryan's best attributes is his 3-point shooting, as he has posted a career 41.1% shooting percentage in his 63 total games in the league.

Ryan briefly spent time with the Celtics on a two-way contract during the 2022 NBA Finals. He was also briefly a fan favorite during Summer League that year after hitting a tough 3-pointer against the Bucks. Ryan also gained some notoriety when he revealed to MassLive that he was a DoorDash driver before starting his professional career.

Now Ryan will look to continue his NBA dream. It appears the Knicks are serious about signing him later, although they will take a closer look at the guard first. Ryan has played in the league with the Celtics, Lakers, Timberwolves and Pelicans.
