First warnings for Sunday and Monday for heavy rain and possible severe storms

We are monitoring a risk of severe weather across North Texas on Sunday and Monday, which has prompted the CBS Texas Weather Team to issue an early day alert for Sunday and Monday.

We are primarily tracking hail, damaging winds and a possible tornado.

In fact, strong thunderstorms have dumped heavy rain across northwestern counties over the past 24 hours, prompting flood warnings. These warnings remain in effect until Monday morning as renewed heavy rain creates the risk of flooding. An additional 1 to 2 inches is possible south of I-20 and more than 3.5 inches north.

In addition to the risk of flooding, severe thunderstorms are expected on Sunday afternoon and evening. The most intense storms are likely to occur in northwest counties, where the Storm Prediction Center says there is a low risk.

Another line of strong thunderstorms is expected to develop in the early afternoon and continue into the evening. Hail and damaging winds are the primary concern, but an isolated tornado is also possible. Conditions will be clear overnight with some lingering showers.

Monday's severe threat increases with an increased risk of numerous severe storms for northeastern counties and a slight risk for all of North Texas overall.

A front will collide with an abundance of instability and moisture, resulting in a dynamic threat of tornadoes, hail and damaging winds on Monday. Timing-wise, the strongest storms are expected for western counties in the morning, the I-35 corridor and DFW in the afternoon, and eastern counties in the late afternoon and evening.

The good news is that the front will bring much-needed rain, cooler temperatures, and a sunny afternoon just in time for Election Day!

The calm won't last long, another front is on the way early Thursday morning, which will lead to an increase in precipitation and the active pattern. Stay tuned for the latest weather updates!
