An FC Bayern Munich fan died as a result of a medical emergency during the Champions League game against Benfica Lisbon on Wednesday.

The Bundesliga club confirmed on Thursday morning that the fan had died on the way to hospital.

Bayern fans in the Südkurve – the south stand in the Allianz Arena, where the club's ultras are based – were largely silent during the game and stopped chanting while the fan was being treated. A Bayern ultra used his microphone to draw the attention of other fans in the south curve to what was happening.

A Bayern statement said: “FC Bayern's 1-0 win against Benfica Lisbon in the league phase of the Champions League on Wednesday evening was overshadowed by sad news, as a medical emergency in the Allianz Arena crowd overshadowed the game from the start .” . Out of respect, the Südkurve refrained from its usual loud support of the team, and the club also reduced its coverage of the game.

“About an hour after the end of the game, the club received the sad news that the fan had died on the way to hospital. FC Bayern mourns with its relatives.”

“We didn't know about it (the medical emergency) during the game, shortly after,” Bayern midfielder Konrad Laimer told the Associated Press. “We wish the family a lot of strength and all the best, think of everyone involved and hope for the best for each fan.”

Bayern defeated Benfica 1-0 after Jamal Musiala's goal in the 67th minute.
