After struggling with his timing in the Blue Jackets' preseason opener in Buffalo on Monday in a 6-1 loss, the highly talented second-year center led to an eighth-place finish with a hat trick against the Washington Capitals at Capital One on Friday :4 win Arena.

Mathieu Olivier added two more goals for the Blue Jackets (2-1-0), who were forced to sit on their charter plane in Columbus for three hours before traveling to a game that was postponed twice.

“It was a little strange, but we had a lot of fun with it,” Fantilli said. “We all walked in and asked each other, 'When was the last time you dressed for a game without a bag?' So we had a lot of fun.”

Olivier's goals were his second and third of the pre-season (two games), while Cole Sillinger, James Malatesta and Mikael Pyyhtia scored the other three goals. Pyyhtia added an assist on a two-point night and rookie Gavin Brindley finished with two points and two assists.

Nine Blue Jackets scored at least one point in a balanced offensive performance, while goaltenders Daniil Tarasov and Pavel Cajan combined to stop 22 of 26 shots. The start of the game was delayed due to the Blue Jackets' travel issues. The original start time was 7:00 p.m., but was first pushed back to 8:15 p.m. and then to 8:39 p.m. before the puck finally dropped.

The Blue Jackets host the Buffalo Sabers on Saturday at Nationwide Arena in their fourth preseason game. The Sabres' NHL roster is in Europe for the NHL's Global Series, so the team Buffalo brings will consist of youth and AHL players.

The Capitals, who played NHL goaltender Charlie Lindgren, formed a roster with eight NHL players. Alex Ovechkin was one of them, scoring 6:58 into the game to give Washington a 1-0 lead. This turnaround was the Capitals' only lead, and it didn't last long.

Fantilli scored the first of his three goals at 10:47 of the first, tying the score at 1-1, before James Malatesta gave the Blue Jackets a 2-1 lead three minutes later. Jakub Vrana made it 2-2 for the Capitals with 5:59 left in the opening period, but Olivier and Fantilli scored the next two breakaways in the second half to give Columbus a 4-2 lead.

Dylan Strome and Pyyhtia traded goals in the second period to give the Blue Jackets a 5-3 lead before the Capitals pulled within 5-4 midway through the third period on Jakob Chychrun's tally. Fantilli's third goal and empty goals from Sillinger and Olivier sealed the Jackets' win.
