Fan Jam takes place as the MFFLs get their first look at Klay Thompson

The Mavericks' Fan Jam open practice will be held Sunday at the American Airlines Center.

It's a great opportunity for fans to get an informal look at the new team, in which Klay Thompson joins Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić, although he will not take part in the fight due to a bruised left calf .

But Fan Jam, presented by ShiftKey, is still a fun day for players and fans, and it will be interesting to see Thompson, Spencer Dinwiddie, Naji Marshall and Quentin Grimes take the court for the first time as Mavericks.

Doors open at 11:15 a.m. for entertainment and gifts. The Mavericks will take the field around noon. There is free parking and entry is free.

Seeing the new players will add even more excitement.

But one of the old heads – in fact, the Mavericks' oldest head – will start the new season with high hopes.

Dwight Powell enters his 11thTh This season, almost exclusively with the Mavericks, the Mavericks were at their worst when they missed the playoffs. And he's now seen them reach the NBA Finals and has high hopes they can get the deal done this season.

“I’ve been here for a while and I think each season carries over to the next,” Powell said. “We’re learning a lot and I think we’re evolving in a lot of ways, trying to improve and find ways to win a championship.”

And the addition of Thompson has infused new energy into an already energized organization.

“I was definitely excited,” Powell said of acquiring Thompson. “I mean, one of the greatest shooters of our generation, for sure. And one of the greatest shooters the game has ever seen.

“So you naturally start the thought pattern of imagining what it will be like and seeing certain situations, with Luka and Kai creating the gravity. There will be many great opportunities for him to be extremely successful.”

And by extension, the Mavericks. In addition to the shooting, it's the expertise that Thompson brings to the table.

“I think the most important thing is that he knows how to win,” Powell said. “He knows how to play the game properly. And it will create a deadly weapon on the field that will create even more space.”

“X and O, I think that speaks for itself. We have to figure this out together. But we’re really excited about this group.”

It comes after a summer in which Powell enjoyed great success with the Canadian national team at the Olympics. Although they didn't win a medal, Powell said it was nothing short of a great achievement.

“It’s really an honor,” he said. “It was a dream for me – to play in the Olympics.

“So it was really special to finally get there, definitely a must for me.”
