Fall weather, rain to visit Metro Phoenix

The weather in the valley is expected to be near perfect this weekend, so enjoy it before it gets hot again.

Maybe it's a good time for a run or a bike ride. That's what meteorologist Matt Salerno of the National Weather Service in Phoenix plans to do when he's not working.

“Just go out and enjoy the nice change,” he said.

A cold front is approaching and about half the valley could see measurable rain Friday morning: moderate showers, maybe a rumble or two of thunder. The afternoon is expected to be dry and gusty, with winds up to 30 mph and highs in the low 80s.

Then the reward for enduring a Phoenix summer: a Saturday morning in the mid to upper 50s and a high around 78.

“It will feel fresh,” Salerno said. “It will definitely feel like a fall day.”

A high in the low 80s is expected for Sunday.

But then highs are expected to return to the 90s early next week – and reach 100 by midweek.

It could be a La Niña winter if a cooling of part of the Pacific Ocean, mainly the equatorial Pacific, contributes to changing weather patterns in the lower 48 states, Salerno explained. This will keep the jet stream farther north and a ridge of high pressure over the desert southwest, bringing warmer, drier weather than usual.

So make the most of the next few days.

“Just enjoy it,” Salerno said. “Definitely enjoy this weekend.”
