Lando Norris admits 'It's a shame but it's the truth' in F1 title fight with Max Verstappen

Lando Norris has admitted he is “not quite” at Max Verstappen’s “level” at this critical stage in the Formula 1 title race.

Norris had two chances to close the gap on leader Verstappen last weekend, in the US Grand Prix sprint race on Saturday and the standard race on Sunday.

Red Bull's Verstappen started the sprint from pole position and secured victory, while McLaren's Norris dropped from second to third. Then on Sunday, Norris dropped from pole to fourth, while Verstappen dropped from second to third.

“Max is the best in the world at this style of defense and attack,” Norris said via the BBC. “So I have to be on his level.”

McLaren loses attempt to overturn Lando Norris' penalty after Max Verstappen incident

McLaren has failed in its attempt to overturn Lando Norris' penalty at the United States Grand Prix.

The team invoked a “right to review” and asked the stewards to take another look at the Turn 12 incident in Austin, in which Norris was given a five-second penalty for running off the track in the closing stages and gained a lasting advantage when overtaking Max Verstappen.

This meant that the British driver fell behind his title rivals, while the Dutchman extended his lead in the championship to 57 points.

Sergio Perez's F1 clock is ticking – and the impact on the future of the Mexican Grand Prix could be huge

1:00 p.m , Chris Wilson

It's hard to remember the last time Sergio Perez's seat at Red Bull wasn't under intense scrutiny and pressure. Maybe at the start of this season, after four podiums in the first five races and with Christian Horner's juggernaut on track as the sport's number one. However, the sand has now shifted.

With five races remaining in 2024, Red Bull sits second in the constructors' championship: 40 points behind McLaren in first, but just eight points ahead of Ferrari in third. Max Verstappen, who is aiming for the drivers' title for the fourth time in a row, has collected over 70% of Red Bull's points himself. However, Perez is a massive 204 points behind his teammate and sits in eighth place in the individual standings.

It is by far the largest gap between teammates in the sport. Nevertheless, the 34-year-old remains at his post ahead of his home race in Mexico City this weekend. His podium finish in 2021 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, in front of his adoring father, is undoubtedly a career highlight.

Formula 1 next travels to Mexico City, where the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez will host the Mexican Grand Prix and the 20th round of the 2024 season.

Charles Leclerc won an action-packed US Grand Prix on Sunday, leading a Ferrari one-two on a memorable day for the Scuderia in Austin.

The main topic of conversation was the highly contentious battle between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, which saw the McLaren driver finish second and be demoted to fourth after a penalty. In addition to his victory in the sprint race, this means Verstappen extended his lead over Norris in the world championship to 57 points with five laps to go.
