Everything you need to know about voting on November 5th

CHICAGO – Chicago residents will head to the polls on Nov. 5 to vote in the 2024 general election.

Neighbors will vote for presidential and prosecutor candidates, among others.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Check your registration: To vote you must be registered. You can check online whether you are registered.

2. Same day registration: You can still register and then vote immediately on Election Day. You will need to do this at your local polling place (you can check where that is located here) and you will need to bring two pieces of ID, including one with your current address.

How to vote

Once you've reviewed your voter registration information and made sure it's accurate, you're ready to get started. There are several ways to vote in Chicago:

• Voting by letter: Chicagoans can vote by mail — and you don't need a reason to use the process.

Once you receive your ballot, you can fill it out and mail it back to the city, deliver it in person to the Board of Elections, leave it in a mailbox, or have it delivered via a licensed service such as FedEX, UPS or DHL.

The ballot must be mailed by November 5th at the latest.

Early voting: Early voting continues through November 4th, but you can still vote on Election Day at most early voting sites.

• Election day: Of course, you can also vote at your local polling station on election day. You can check where you should vote here.

Chicago voters can also vote at any early voting location on Election Day. Click here for a list of early voting sites.

Polling stations are open on election day from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

• In most cases, ID is not required to vote. However, you must provide identification if an election judge questions your right to vote. Here is a list of acceptable forms of identification.

• You will also need two pieces of ID if you register to vote on Election Day or during early voting.

• Local polling station: If you're voting on Election Day and don't go to an early voting site, you'll need to go to your local polling place. You can search for your polling place for Election Day online.

Early voting sites: You can vote at any early voting site, including on Election Day. Click here for a list of early voting sites and their hours of operation.
