The NFL trade deadline coincides with this year's presidential election, both scheduled for November 5th. In an interview Wednesday morning with Bay Area radio station KNBR, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch emphasized that no deals are imminent. However, with six days left, there is still a chance that something could happen.

ESPN recently examined the trading landscape. Looking at the 49ers specifically, Jeremy Fowler suggested that the team could look to bolster its defensive line. In a trade conversation with his colleague Dan Graziano, he noted that a reunion with former 49ers DeForest Buckner or DJ Jones would be logical. Graziano agreed, but indicated he doesn't believe the Indianapolis Colts or Denver Broncos are currently interested in trading either player.

However, Graziano suggested the 49ers have another potential target on the defensive line.

“If the Niners are looking to play up front on defense, the more likely trade candidate might be Davon Godchaux from New England, as the Patriots appear to be moving guys they recently extended,” Graziano wrote. “Godchaux has a guaranteed salary of $4 million next year. But the Niners are all-in, and I expect them to seek help on defense, where they haven't looked like themselves all season.”

The 49ers struggled with injuries throughout their roster, including on the defensive line. Losing defensive tackle Javon Hargrave to a triceps injury was a huge blow. There's a slim chance he returns if the team makes a good run in the playoffs. Like Hargrave, defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos is also on injured reserve, although he is expected to return sooner from his knee injury.

According to Pro Football Reference, San Francisco's defense recorded a pressure rate of 23.5%, ranking 14th in the NFL. They collected 20 sacks, which ranks 12th in the league. The team would ideally like to climb further up both lists.

While Godchaux isn't exactly known for his pass rushing abilities, his inclusion could improve interior depth and help outside pass rushers be more effective. Additionally, he would likely cost a lot less than a top-tier defensive lineman.

“The 49ers are in a difficult position because they have to make some important decisions regarding some big contracts this coming offseason,” Graziano continued. “But you can't get any closer to winning the Super Bowl without pushing through than they did in February, and they feel like they owe it to the group, to play their best.”
