Jamie Smith's fabulous 89 and three late wickets gave England the upper hand on a breathless first day of the third and crucial Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.

Smith dragged England to a total of 267, then top-order Pakistan stumbled to 73-3, putting the tourists in a favorable position for a second successive win in this country.

On a pitch Pakistan had dried out with huge fans and patio heaters, the hosts' plan was vindicated, thanks in part to some sloppy batting from England after the visitors won a crucial toss.

Only Ben Duckett was innocent of his dismissal with 52 points as England fell from 56-0 to 118-6 before Smith pulled off an impressive save.

The wicketkeeper added 105 with Gus Atkinson making 39, with Smith accelerating with a pass of 50. He smashed six sixes and was too cavalier in his search for a seventh to be in the over before tea.

England were dismissed earlier in the evening, with off-spinner Sajid Khan taking nine wickets to secure 6-128 for Pakistan's victory in the second Test.

Pakistan used spin exclusively across the 68.2 overs, the longest first innings in Test history without seam bowling.

England's total no longer felt equal before Shoaib Bashir, Jack Leach and Atkinson took a wicket each to leave Pakistan 194 behind.
