COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – The 2024 general election is just hours away. This time on Tuesday, we'll likely have some results about who our next representatives in Congress will be and what kind of new laws will be passed in Colorado, and while many wait for those answers, voters' passion and emotions are rising.

11 News reached out to voters on all sides of the aisle. They tell us that this election is big, not just in terms of election results but across dozens of ballot measures.

“There are more emotions at play here. Right now, I would say the game is on the line in the fourth quarter. We need a Hail Mary victory. We need people to come together and emotions are running high,” said Michael Velasquez, a local voter.

Polls across El Paso County were constantly busy Monday as voters rushed to make sure their voice was heard in the election. Steve Schleiker, the county clerk and clerk, said that despite his requests for early voting, more than 180,000 people will vote between Monday and Tuesday. This means results may be slower on election night.

“We have become such an instantaneous society. People will sit on the couch and want to know the results. Please note that we cannot release results while there are still people in line at the ballot box or in-person polling locations,” said Steve Schleiker, El Paso County Clerk and Recorder.

Schleiker said he understands voters' excitement but wants to make sure the counting process is done correctly.

“This is an election like no other and I don’t think many of us will experience another election like this in our lifetime. No mistakes are allowed in the election process,” said Schleiker.

Those participating in this year's democratic process tell 11 News that at the end of the day and regardless of the winners, we are a nation of united people.

“I really hope everyone can have a responsible experience with this. However it goes, try to remember to be patient and just stay calm,” said Shaylin Johnson, a voter.

“We need the hopes of our country. Don’t just get your hopes up, get started,” said Joe Garcia, another local voter.

Results will not be released immediately at 7 p.m. in El Paso County because all ballot drop boxes and vote centers must ensure that everyone in attendance can cast their vote before the deadline. The first round is expected after 8:00 p.m
