Elon Musk bet heavily on Trump – and won. Will it be worth it for Tesla?

Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk's embrace of President-elect Donald Trump is paying off for Tesla shareholders today. But the question on investors' minds is what this budding relationship will mean for them in the years to come.

Trump, who won convincingly on Election Day, is closely aligned with Musk, who has supported Trump both in rhetoric and with major financial pledges.

Musk, the world's richest man, recently donated a total of $43.6 million in donations to America PAC, his Republican super PAC, in early October. As Yahoo Finance reported, his total known political spending this year now stands at over $132 million.

This is one of the largest sums dedicated to a political candidate and party. In response, Trump has even promised Musk a position in his government and hinted that Musk could lead a commission to increase government efficiency.

Trump referenced Musk in his election victory speech early Wednesday morning, calling him a “super genius” and claiming, “We have to protect our geniuses.” We don't have that many of them.

But the relationship between Trump and Musk was not always so rosy. It was just a few years ago, in 2022, when Trump disparaged Musk on Truth Social, the conservative social media rival platform to Musk's Twitter (now X).

“When Elon Musk came to the White House and asked me for help with all of his many subsidized projects, be they electric cars that don't run long enough, self-driving cars that crash, or rocket ships to nowhere, without which subsidies he would be worthless , and when I told him he was a big Trump fan and a Republican, I could have said, 'Get on your knees and beg,' and he would have done it,” Trump wrote.

This was in response to Musk's statement that Trump was too old to run for president again. Musk bought Twitter earlier this year and invited Trump to return to the platform, along with many other personalities who were banned for offensive views.

Musk is an environmentalist and believes humanity needs to move beyond fossil fuels to save the planet – and if that means people should buy Tesla's electric vehicles, then he's all for it. Trump is an unabashed supporter of fossil fuels and has big plans to open up drilling and reverse emissions regulations and clean energy subsidies.

But Musk's advocacy of free speech, deregulation and anti-woke politics brought him closer to Trump and the Republicans. A snub from President Biden at an EV summit stung Musk, who many believe has done more than anyone else to bring electric vehicles into the mainstream in the US.
