PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona voters approved a Republican-backed plan to empower state and local law enforcement Power to enforce immigration lawsover objections from Democrats and Latino advocacy groups who warn the law will lead to racial profiling.

State lawmakers brought Prop. 314 to a vote after a similar measure was taken vetoed earlier this year from Democratic Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs. critics of the proposal compared to SB 1070the controversial 2010 immigration law, which was partially overturned by the US Supreme Court.

But the measure passed Tuesday resonated with voters fed up with what they felt was the federal government's failure to secure the border.

Under federal law, it is already illegal to enter the United States from Mexico outside of legal ports of entry. But like a bill Texas lawmakers approved it last yearSheriffs, local police and state law enforcement agencies would have the authority to arrest migrants for crossing the border illegally under Prop. 314.

But the law will not come into force immediately.

The Texas measure, SB 4, faces a challenge in federal courtand Arizona's version of the law, although approved by voters, may not be implemented unless a court upholds Texas' right to enforce its own provision.

Some Border Patrol agents in Arizona have warned that they would be unable to enforce the law because no resources were committed to funding the measure.

Separately, Prop. 314 creates new penalties for people who use fraudulent documents to obtain employment or public benefits, and increases penalties for knowingly selling fentanyl — if it comes from outside the U.S. and directly causes the death of another person leads.
