Election Day 2024 live updates: When do the polls open, where to vote, key races for NY, NJ and CT

After a dramatic primary, New Jersey voters are turning to the Nov. 5 general election to decide several races for federal offices across the state.

In the U.S. Senate race, Democratic U.S. Rep. Andy Kim and Republican Curtis Bashaw are vying to fill the vacant seat vacated by former Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez following his conviction on bribery charges. Kim is a congresswoman from the 3rd District and Bashaw is a hotel developer and first-time candidate from southern New Jersey. Four independent candidates are also on the ballot.

Since 2000, Democrats have had an average lead of about 12 points in U.S. Senate elections in New Jersey. The last two New Jersey Republicans to serve in the U.S. Senate were both appointed to the position and each served only a few months. New Jersey's last elected Republican senator left office in 1979.

One of the interesting races in the U.S. House of Representatives is the 7th District seat, which includes Trump's Bedminster Golf Club. Republican Tom Kean Jr. is seeking a second term against Democrat Sue Altman, a former chairwoman of the state's progressive Working Families Alliance. Kean is the son, grandson and great-grandson of former New Jersey elected officials. In the 8th District, Democrat Rob Menendez, son of the recently resigned senator, is seeking a second term against Republican Anthony Valdes.

Important races to watch:

Senate – Democrat Andy Kim versus Republican Curtis Bashaw

NJ-7 – Incumbent Republican Tom Kean Jr. versus Democrat Sue Altman

NJ-8 – Incumbent Democrat Robert Menendez versus Republican Anthony Valdes

NJ-9 – Nellie Pou vs. Billy Prempeh

NJ-10 – Incumbent Democrat LaMonica McIver versus Republican Carmen Bucco
