After a high-speed chase last month, Durango police officers helped capture a fugitive suspect: a red kangaroo.

In body camera footage posted to social media on Wednesday, officers can be seen chasing the furry suspect near East Second Avenue and College Drive around 11 p.m. on Sept. 18.

The marsupial belonged to a Durango resident and had escaped the home when an alarm went off. Officers responded to a third party report of a kangaroo on the loose.

“When the call came, they didn’t believe it,” said Cmdr. said Nick Stasi. “They probably thought someone saw something.”

When they arrived and realized they actually had to catch a kangaroo, they had “a blast.”

“How do I get him?” An officer can be heard giggling as the animal hops along College Drive.

Finally, the kangaroo's owner came to help and the animal came towards him.

It is legal to keep a red kangaroo as a pet as long as it is properly imported, said John Livingston, spokesman for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
