Drake Maye of the Patriots opened the game in London with a 16-yard TD pass

LONDON – Rookie quarterback Drake Maye's calm response to a third-down blitz was key in giving the New England Patriots a 7-0 lead on their first possession of Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium.

On third-and-10 from the Jaguars' 16-yard line, Maye was in shotgun with running back JaMycal Hasty sitting to his right. The Jaguars applied pressure — defensive end Josh Hines-Allen dropped into coverage while defensive backs Darnell Savage and Antonio Johnson rushed — and Maye calmly threw the ball to Hasty on the right side.

Hasty, a five-year veteran who formerly played for the Jaguars, then did the rest, first running up the sideline before retreating inside at the 9-yard line and darting into the end zone as the Jaguars' defenders closed in their attempts to do so were flawed. Maye, making his second start in his NFL career, was 6 of 7 for 62 yards on the opening march.

It was the Patriots' first opening drive this season that ended with points on the scoreboard. Against the Lightning in particular, Maye was 3 of 4 for 30 yards and the touchdown on the first drive. Three of his four touchdown passes came against the Lightning.
