Donte DiVincenzo brings shooting, passing, defense and edge

LA VELLE E. NEAL III The Minnesota Star Tribune

MINNEAPOLIS – Donte DiVincenzo is not yet 28 years old, but he has had a long NBA journey that brought him to Minnesota as the right player at the right time.

How does that fit? He hits threes. He defends with tenacity. Due to his playing ability, Timberwolves coach Chris Finch is currently having to adapt his duties.

“I realize he really loves winning and competing, you know,” center Rudy Gobert said after practice Saturday. “…He’s a clear winner.”

That's why the Wolves didn't trade the most talented big man in the game, Karl-Anthony Towns, to the New York Knicks without DiVincenzo being part of the deal. Now they have someone who has absorbed everything he could from four other organizations and has developed into the player the Wolves need.

The playmaking is a welcome development for Finch as he handles the workload of point guard Mike Conley Jr. while also playing in rookie Rob Dillingham.

When DiVincenzo goes to the paint shop, a world of possibilities opens up to him. Hit a floater. Kudos to Gobert. Find Jaden McDaniels editing. Connect Ant. “He was an outstanding playmaker with the ball in his hands,” Finch said.

DiVincenzo was drafted by Milwaukee in 2018 out of Villanova, where he won two NCAA titles. He won a ring with the Bucks in 2020-21 while playing with an MVP in Giannis Antetokounmpo.

“It was fun,” DiVincenzo said. “I think he’s very selfless. You see a lot of downhill runs and dunks, but you also see a lot of simple pick-and-rolls that he gives you that allows guards to go downhill and allows guards to get free to shoot. Selflessness accompanies him, not the spotlight.”

Then, boom, in 2022, DiVincenzo was part of a four-team trade that sent him to Sacramento, and from there he signed as a free agent with Golden State, where he studied under another former NBA MVP, Steph Curry .

“I learned a lot from Steph,” DiVincenzo said. “Moved. Just constantly moving. Regardless of whether you get the ball or not, as long as you move, someone will get a shot. I think I tried to take that away from him. Everyone says it's the shooting, but that's really the movement.

“If you can condition yourself in the offseason or preseason to move nonstop and get to where you want to be, then it’s just point shots from there.”

DiVincenzo declined a $4.7 million second-year option to sign a four-year, $50 million contract with the Knicks before the 2023-24 season. He reunited with Villanova colleagues Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart and played for former Wolves coach Tom Thibodeau.

Thibodeau seems like a madman because of his defensive principles and effort in the starting lineup, but Thibs often gets the best out of his players. DiVincenzo bet on himself and posted the best season of his career, averaging 15.5 points with 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

Boom again and now he's with the Wolves. It's a franchise he studied when he came out of Villanova, a team he was considering as a free agent. The Towns trade means Finch is tasked with building cohesion within his changed core, but his bench is longer with a starting-caliber player in DiVincenzo.

It's possible that DiVincenzo would have developed into the all-around player he is today had he stayed with one organization. But he sounded grateful to have a little NBA tour.

“I think that’s why I’m here today,” he said. “If you stay with a team in this situation, you develop within that organization, within that system, whatever the role is. In every team I went to, I had a different role. And with every team I've gone to, I've expanded that role. For me it’s just about continuing to work behind closed doors and whatever that role is or whatever opportunity comes along, taking full advantage of it.”

DiVincenzo sees another possible step in his development as moving further forward in the title hunt. The wolves also want to take this step. It seems like everyone can help each other.

“I went from a team that was one game away from the Eastern Conference finals to a team that was a game or two away from making the finals,” he said. “I don’t think it’s going to get any better.”
