Details on former Raiders WR Davante Adams' revised contract with the Jets

Most people know, or should know, that NFL contracts are only as good as the guaranteed money in them. And even then, they can be redesigned to be almost exactly what a team needs them to be.

Take Davante Adams' contract starting in 2022. The one he was playing under just a few weeks ago.

This deal was touted as a monster five-year, $140 million contract. But if you looked beyond the agent's words, that was far from the case.

It was actually a one-year contract. Yes, a one-year contract.

Only $22.75 million was fully guaranteed, meaning the Raiders could opt out of the game after one season.

If they decide to keep Davante, more guarantees would be added, making it a three-year deal. He would never make anything from the last two years of spending non-guaranteed money on window dressings.

The Raiders did that, meaning his guarantees expired after this season. When they traded him, some said the Jets were signing Davante for a half-season.

Well, you knew that wouldn't be the case. They didn't even send the minimum third-round picks to Las Vegas for 10 Davante games.

Today the Jets did the expected thing – they reworked his deal. Ensure it is paid at least until 2025.

Not only did the Jets ensure that Adams would still be under contract next season, but they also lowered their own cap number in the process. It looks like they turned a void year into an extension year, but that doesn't matter because – like I said – he won't play for $36 million a season or no guaranteed money.

The Jets clearly see that with Rodgers and Adams together for this season and next, they have a small window of opportunity to have a chance at the Super Bowl.

So far, it hasn't looked like that's going to be possible for them this season, as they're 2-6 this season – the same as Adams' previous team, for that matter – including losing both games since Adams' arrival.
