CHARLOTTE – Derek Carr responded to former wide receiver Michael Thomas' critical comments after Sunday's 23-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers in which he blamed the New Orleans Saints quarterback for a throw that gave Chris Olave a concussion had, telling reporters that he felt “sick” about playing but that he didn't know “what I did to Thomas.”

With seven minutes left in the first quarter, Olave was knocked down by safety Xavier Woods on a shot over the middle and lay down for several minutes. He was eventually carted off the field and taken to a local hospital, where he has since been released and rejoined the Saints.

After the game, Thomas posted a series of tweets aimed at his former quarterback – including one that said Carr was “such an ass.” The tweets marked the latest instance of the former Saints receiver taking to social media to blame the signal-caller, which happened several times last season when the two teammates were in New Orleans.

“I love Mike,” Carr said. “If he does that, I obviously don’t care. I've had so many teammates over the years and he's like the guy who couldn't get along with me. And I don't know what I did.” For him, I don't know why he feels that way. I'm sorry he feels like he has to do that.

“But he never called me during that time. My phone number has never changed. I've actually called him on several occasions. Just to try. And sometimes you can try as hard as you want and it just doesn't work. And that’s fine, so I don’t know why he feels that way.”

Carr said he hasn't seen Thomas' tweets – and won't, as he tries to avoid reading about himself, whether positive or negative. The quarterback said he wishes Thomas “the best” and added that the comments were “unfortunate” considering they came from a player.

Thomas, who played eight seasons with the Saints, has not played in the NFL since being released in the offseason.

“I hope he comes to a team and does what he wants to do and loves doing it,” Carr said. “I will never change. I love him that way. It's just something I would never do to a teammate.

“Because it was a single high, the ball went where we were talking about it and unfortunately Chris got hit in the head. This happens in our game and I would never do it on purpose. I didn't throw him in. That look, it wasn't like any other coverage where a guy just…all those things. When it comes to the football aspect, I really don't have an answer. But when it comes to the person, I just hope he gets what he’s looking for.”

Although Carr noted he had no answer to the throw, he said he felt “a pit in his stomach” after seeing Olave go to the ground.

“If (Thomas) wants me to say it, or what he's looking for is to blame me for hurting Chris Olave, then he can blame me,” Carr said. “It won’t change my day. I get a sinking feeling in my stomach every time one of my teammates is out because I love them so much. It doesn't matter whether I like her or not.

“And I happen to love Chris Olave. We have a great relationship, and every time that happens I feel sick and I hate – I hate, and I probably don't use that word – and I hate moments like that. To be clear: I hate it when it happens. It makes me sick every time this happens, whether they don't get up or whether they get up. I don't like that.

“You do your best to never put anyone in that situation. And over the course of my career it hasn't happened that often. Luckily it didn't happen. I don't know it. I'm sorry I wish we could have done better. I wish I could have made Mike happier.
