Danny Elfman on whether Nightmare is a Christmas or Halloween movie

Danny Elfman has an opinion on this Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. is a Christmas or Halloween film.

The stop-motion animated classic was released on October 29, 1993 and is set in two holiday-themed villages: Halloween Town and Christmas Town. nightmare is based on an original story by Tim Burton, who also produced the film, while Henry Selick directed.

Elfman, of course, composed the score and original songs for the film and provided the singing voice of his main character Jack Skellington, while Chris Sarandon provided the speaking voice of the beanstalk skeleton. Catherine O'Hara voices Sally, while the late Ken Page lent his booming voice to the villainous Oogie Boogie.

With Christmas Town and Santa Claus (Edward Ivory) making up a large portion of the action in the film, a debate has developed over the decades about what kind of Christmas movie it should be nightmare it actually is.

Since Elfman is as close to the film as any of the main creatives, I recently asked him about his film's digital release in a Zoom call Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Original score for his opinion on whether he thought nightmare was a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie.

“Looking at how many Jack Skellington characters are currently being hung in my neighborhood for Halloween decorations, I think there will come a point in another generation where kids will think that Jack Skellington is a Halloween character is, just like Santa Claus at Christmas,” Elfman noted. “They'll probably think that and say, 'Oh, they made that movie about this Jack Skellington guy,' you know? Not the other way around.”

Elfman thinks Nightmare will work for both holidays, but…

By the time Jack Skellington transitions into the mythical Halloween character that Danny Elfman believes he will become in a future generation, the composer has already decided what kind of film he thinks Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Is.

“I think of it as a Halloween movie, but it works like a Christmas movie. It's one of those rare things. It does both. You have Santa Claus and you have Jack Skellington,” Elfman said. “My favorite holiday of the year has definitely always been Halloween and Jack Skellington is a character I'm very close to. That’s why Halloween and Jack Skellington will always have a special place in my heart.”
