Dana Carvey improvised “SNL” and smashed Maya Rudolph with ice

Dana Carvey saw an opportunity to create a chaotic moment on live television – and jumped at it.

The Saturday Night Live alum, who returned to the show last week to once again play President Joe Biden in a cold open with Maya Rudolph's Kamala Harris and Andy Samberg's Doug Emhoff, revealed that the skit's most memorable moment was an act of improvisation.

“The ice cream cone wasn’t planned,” Carvey said on his Fly on the wall Podcast, referring to a giant soft serve ice cream cone that he used as a prop during the skit and which ended up hitting Rudolph in the face. “I asked the prop man to give me some ice cream just to save it for the fashion show. And then at the air show, she gave me a much bigger ice cream (one), and I didn't ask her for it.”

Because the dessert, a famous favorite of the real Biden, was so much bigger during the live show, the gears in Carvey's comedy brain began to turn. “I was kind of right when I gestured,” he said. “I thought, 'Here's ice, big lump. Here is Maya's face.' And I didn't want to hurt her, but I just thought about it and did it in two seconds. This clears up all the rumors and all the talk.

The spontaneous outpouring of milk seemed to surprise Rudolph at the moment, as she immediately began grinning, seemingly suppressing laughter as soon as the ice cream touched her face.

Elsewhere in the podcast, Carvey reiterated that he doesn't mean to disrespect Biden with his impression, seeing him as a heightened character who takes the president's strange qualities to comedic, unrealistic extremes. “The main thing is that it makes me laugh, and I definitely do things that he doesn't do,” he explained. “He doesn’t hit ice in the face. Do you know? He doesn't say I can't believe it's not butter. I’m doing what I did with the first Bush.”

Carvey believes it's easier for people to digest impressions of Biden since the politician dropped out of the presidential race because audiences no longer feel like they have to uphold the president as a strong opponent of Donald Trump. “It was a hot potato because he’s the president and he’s running for re-election against Trump,” Carvey said. “There was a lot more political energy. Now he’s passed it, and I think it’s playful and fun.”

The comedian also invited Biden to make fun of himself alongside Carvey. “If he ever comes on the show and kind of quietly says, 'You know what? And by the way, if I wanted to do it, I would do it with him,” Carvey said.

Carvey was there SNL Cast from 1986 to 1993 in which he played a number of politicians, most notably President George H. W. Bush. A number of cast members, alumni and guests have played Biden over the years, including Jason Sudeikis, Woody Harrelson, John Mulaney, Jim Carrey, Alex Moffat, James Austin Johnson and Mikey Day, in addition to Kevin Nealon, who played the then-Senator in one 1991 sketch for the Clarence Thomas hearings.
