Dan Quinn: Jayden Daniels is there week in and week out, we're hoping he'll play

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn graded quarterback Jayden Daniels as “week-to-week” in his press conference Monday after this year's No. 2 overall pick suffered a rib injury in yesterday's win over the Panthers.

“We're going to take him through all the steps in training, assess how he's doing and keep working on it,” Quinn said. “We hope he can play. But we will also make sure to take every precaution and make it smart for the player and the man.

“It's not going to be something that's going to faze him in the long run. So we will list it week by week. And hopefully he plays this week and we can make it to the end.”

Quinn noted that Daniels suffered the injury on Washington's first play, which he thought was a 46-yard run.

Although he managed to finish that possession, Washington thought it best to hold him off for the rest of the contest.

Given that this is a core injury, Quinn noted that Daniels needs to be able to execute all of his movements in order to play the way he is used to.

He is such a unique player “I want to make sure he can be himself, in his own way — the moves, the throwing, everything that goes with it, as you can imagine,” Quinn said. “So I know he’s going to do everything he can. But I will trust my eyes. And certainly I know him well. So like I said, we’ll take every step.”

Quinn added that he realizes he may have to hold Daniels back a bit.

“He’s basically a real competitor. And we wouldn’t expect anything less,” Quinn said. “But we're going to really trust our eyes and the medical staff and like I said, we're going to make sure we assess this every day and make sure that when he's able to be himself in that area , then we.” let it rip. But we just do it all week – we have the practice of assessing and going through movements. Every day we will have a better update.”

Daniels has completed a league-high 75.6 percent of his passes for 1,410 yards this season with six touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 372 yards with four touchdowns.

The Commanders host the Bears on Sunday and release their first injury report of the week on Wednesday. If Daniels cannot play, Marcus Mariota will start at quarterback.
