Dan Campbell 4th Down Decisions: How successful has the Lions coach been in his coaching career?

Head coaches in the NFL tend to develop a personal identity. It may be their coaching style or the fact that they also choose to wear sweatshirts in early September.

For Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell, he's a combination of a odds machine and known for trying anything on fourth down.

Football is largely an analytical game with mathematical formulas that can help determine whether a team should opt for the game. Regardless of whether there is a jump in the data or not, Campbell's default answer always seems to be: “How high?”

Let's take a look at how Campbell has performed on fourth downs for the Lions so far.

Dan Campbell 4. Down Conversion Rates

Campbell was hired as the Lions' head coach in 2021. In its first season, the team posted a 3-13-1 record and finished last in the NFC North. Campbell led Detroit to a 9-8 record as a sophomore and to a 12-5 record last year as the Lions won the NFC North for the first time since 1993.

Overall, Campbell compiled a 30-27-1 record in his four seasons in Detroit. While he looks like the head coach the Lions faithful have been waiting for, it's his aggressive coaching style that has won over fans. Sure, they're not successful every time, but considering how successful the Lions are, that's usually forgiven and viewed as a positive.

There are times when Campbell will opt for a two-pointer when it seems like going for the extra point would be the right move, but his aggressive coaching style typically manifests itself in him going for it on fourth down.

4. Descent

Since Campbell took over as head coach, Detroit has finished fourth 133 times. This leads the NFL, followed by the Cleveland Browns (126) and Carolina Panthers (124).

Of the 133 fourth-down plays, 70 resulted in a first down and 11 resulted in a touchdown. With a 52.6 percent fourth-down conversion rate into either a first down or a touchdown, the Lions rank 17th overall but are fourth among teams with at least 100 fourth-down attempts in the last four Seasons.

This season, Detroit has finished fourth place 10 times. The Panthers and Browns are tied for the league lead with 18 points and the Lions have the 17th most four-down attempts. Of Detroit's six wins, three were dominant losses, so they didn't have to pounce on fourth place as often. Still, they converted five of their attempts into first downs.

Three of the fourth down attempts occurred on Detroit's own territory. Two of them came in the second quarter against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Lions converted both. One was a three-yard run by David Montgomery on fourth-and-2. The other was a 17-yard pass from punter Jack Fox when they needed 12 yards.

Detroit tried it on fourth-and-7 at its own 33-yard line in the first quarter against the Minnesota Vikings, but failed to convert.
