Cooldown time, possible rain forecast

PHOENIX – Get ready to relax, folks, because the Phoenix metropolitan area is about to experience its coolest weather in six months.

Additionally, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), there is a good chance Phoenix will receive its first measurable precipitation since August.

The first cold front of fall is expected to move into the valley Friday morning, just four days after a three-week streak of record daily temperatures came to a merciful end in Phoenix.

The latest forecast calls for highs in the lower 90s on Thursday before a dip into the lower 80s and upper 70s over the weekend. Additionally, temperatures could dip into the 50s overnight Friday and Saturday.

Phoenix has not seen highs in the 70s or lows in the 50s since mid-April.

However, the cold front will not last long.

“It looks like we will reach the mid to upper 90s again by the middle of next week,” said NWS meteorologist Katherine Berislavich KTAR News 92.3 FM on Thursday morning.

When is the best chance of wet weather?

Meanwhile, there is about a 60% chance of rain in Phoenix Friday morning, with isolated showers most likely from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m

“As far as rainfall in the Phoenix metropolitan area, I don’t see much here. I’m just looking at about a tenth of an inch or less,” Berislavich said.

After Phoenix's seventh-driest monsoon season ever (June 15-September 30), any amount would be welcome.

The last measurable rainfall at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the NWS uses for the city's official readings, fell on August 22, when 0.24 inches fell.

This put the monsoon total in 2024 at 0.74 inches, about 1.7 inches below normal. It was the second consecutive dismal monsoon season for Phoenix, following a record low of 0.15 inches in 2023.
