Coastal flooding warning in New York with no rain forecast – here's why

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning for the five counties, but the reason is not due to rain.

The supermoon brought changes in the tidal cycle and in tUrn, higher tides reaching shore, a National Weather Service spokesperson told PIX11 News.

During full and new moons, the gravitational pull is greater and leads to higher sea levels. Since this full moon is a supermoon, the gravitational pull is even greater, so sea levels will be higher along the coast and flooding may occur during high tide cycles.

Thursday's supermoon was about 222,056 miles from Earth, making it the closest supermoon of the year.

A storm system just off the coast of Virginia is also causing higher sea levels, according to PIX11 meteorologists.
