Cleveland Guardians score against New York Yankees ALCS Game 2

NEW YORK – It's good news and bad news for the Guardians heading into Game 2 of the American League Championship Series on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

The good news is that they will have Tanner Bibee on the mound, and based on how Game 1 went, Emmanuel Clase, Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis and Tim Herrin will be rested and ready for Game 2.

The bad news for Cleveland? The Yankees counter with reigning Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole, making for a tough, tough battle as the Guardians look to tie the series before heading to Cleveland.

Check back here for live score updates, analysis and highlights from Game 2 on Tuesday.

The Yankees beat the Guardians 6-3 to win Game 2 of the ALCS. The Guardians return to Cleveland trailing 0-2 in this series.

The Guardians have done their best with their backs against the wall, but that will be put to the test in this series.

Jose Ramirez hits a solo home run in the 9th inning

The Guardians will need a lot more, and in a hurry, but Jose Ramirez hit a solo home run to the short porch in right field to make it 6-3. This is his second home run of the postseason.

The Guardians only have two outs left to mount a rally.

Aaron Judge hit a two-run home run to center field off Hunter Gaddis, and the Yankees now have a 6-2 lead.

That was Judge's first home run of the 2024 postseason. And it was loud. The Yankees had been waiting for Judge to wake up a little this October, and this was a big moment for them.

Erik Sabrowski hit Jazz Chisolm at second base, but Will Brennan then made a costly error in right field.

With Anthony Volpe leading the way, Anthony Rizzo at first base put a ball right over Josh Naylor's glove. The ball bounced off the wall along the right field line and Brennan had to adjust his route. He also tried to pick up the ball with his bare hands but missed his target, allowing Volpe to score from the start.

The Yankees now lead 4-2.

ALCS Game 1 Takeaways: Cleveland Guardians ALCS Game 1: Alex Cobb battles hip and back injuries

This was a big innings for the Guardians. Against Aaron Judge, Austin Wells and Giancarlo Stanton, Eli Morgan pitched a quick 1-2-3 inning, and Cleveland entered the sixth inning trailing 3-2.

The downside to the Guardians pinch-hitting David Fry for Bo Naylor with the bases loaded early in the game is that Austin Hedges had to bat in the fifth with the bases loaded and Clay Holmes struck him out to end the inning with the Yankees always still leading 3-2.

Possible injury to Austin Wells; Yankees check catcher

The Yankees' training staff checks on catcher Austin Wells. When he hit a ball in the dirt, it looked like he had injured a finger on his throwing hand. Wells stays in the game.

It's a one-run game.

Will Brennan dropped the ball to the right side and Anthony Rizzo only went to second base. The Yankees are 3-2 with two outs in the fifth and runners on the corners.

Gerrit Cole walked Lane Thomas to load the bases again, and he won't escape the fifth inning. The Yankees turn to Clay Holmes.

Will Brennan and Andres Gimenez are due. The Guardians have a great chance to do damage here.

Steven Kwan hit a single to left, Kyle Manzardo hit a single to right field and Jose Ramirez drew a walk to load the bases with no one out for Josh Naylor.

Cole, still trying to find his command, fell behind 2-0 before Naylor hit a sacrifice fly to right field to increase the score to 3-1 early in the fifth inning.

Ramirez then stole second base to put two runners in scoring position.

The Guardians had a great chance in the fourth inning and went aggressive.

Gerrit Cole walked Andres Gimenez to load the bases with one out, and that led to David Fry pinch-hitting for Bo Naylor. But Fry jumped out for the second time on the first pitch he saw.

Gerrit Cole then knocked Brayan Rocchio to the ground and the Guardians missed a golden opportunity.

Tim Herrin comes to pitch.

Cade Smith did his job for the most part, allowing just one run in a tough spot on a sacrifice fly to center field by Aaron Judge. Smith then struck out Austin Wells to end the inning with the Yankees leading 3-0.

Once again, the Guardians have a tough battle ahead of them as they must try to make a comeback against Cole.

Cade Smith enters the game in an extremely dangerous situation: the bases are loaded with Aaron Judge at the plate.

With runners on second and third, the Guardians elected to intentionally walk Juan Soto, which will load the bases for Judge. Smith will face him with one out in the inning.

This is the maximum possible leverage of a situation in the second inning of a game.

Bibee only threw 39 shots, so there's a chance he could come back with a short break, possibly for Game 5 (which would have been Alex Cobb's day).

Two singles to start the second inning put runners on the corners with no one out, and Alex Verdugo lined an RBI double down the left field line, giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead with no one out in the second inning and At the top no one was outside the New York order was due.

The Yankees threaten to end this game early if this inning gets past Bibee.

Cade Smith is already warming up in the Cleveland bullpen.

In a postseason rematch of Josh Naylor's “Rock the Baby” celebration against Gerrit Cole, Naylor hit a single to right field to momentarily silence the chorus of boos that had accompanied him through New York since the 2022 postseason bring.

Cole put the Guardians in order after that and the Yankees will maintain their 1-0 lead.

Tanner Bibee pitched a great inning, allowing just one unearned run considering the Yankees had runners on the corners, no one was out, and Aaron Judge was at the plate.

Will Brennan also made a great sliding catch in foul territory, forcing Giancarlo Stanton to retire.

Right now, Rocchio's error looms large as New York holds a 1-0 lead with a former Cy Young winner on the mound.

Brayan Rocchio had a great postseason. He built so much goodwill, so much positive momentum. But a massive faux pas in the first inning will throw a spanner in the works.

Gleyber Torres opened the first inning with a double off Tanner Bibee, and Juan Soto followed with a single that moved Aaron Judge to the corners.

Bibee triggered a pop-up from Judge, giving the Guardians a big break, but Rocchio missed the routine play and the ball bounced off his glove into shallow right field, allowing Torres to score.

It's 1-0 for the Yankees and there are still no outs.

Gerrit Cole had a brisk first inning, although Jose Ramirez narrowly missed a home run down the right field line, although he missed it and then hit a deep flyout to right field.

It's still goalless.

The Guardians had to have some difficult conversations with Ben Lively to let him know he wouldn't be on their first two playoff rosters. But now Lively has a chance to play a key role in the ALCS.

Major League Baseball has agreed to a roster move for Lively to replace Alex Cobb, who is dealing with hip and back problems.

Manager Stephen Vogt noted before the game that the team is still working on how it will handle Games 3, 4 and 5 and, in particular, how Lively fits into those plans. Without the lower back strain, Cobb would have been in the starting lineup for Game 5.

“I have to talk about how sad we are about Alex, about everything he's been through this year and with us in and out of IL, out of IL, and about him having a new back strain last night, I just feel with him and what he went through and so grateful for what he gave us,” Vogt said.
