Important events

We are on equal terms! Or is it? They check to see if Isak is offside before scoring.

share

31 mins: It's end to end! I can barely keep up. Now Newcastle have a corner kick and Isak escapes his opponent, but he can't wrap his head around the ball enough and his shot from the near post goes wide.

share

29 mins: Palmer delivers a nasty corner that forces Pope to hit from his own line. But Newcastle get a free kick when Fofana commits a stupid foul.

share

27 mins: Three shots from Newcastle are a reminder that they will not give up. The first two – from Isak and Tonali – are blocked. Almiron makes it through the defensive wall, but Sanchez easily parries. It all started with a great ball forward for Isak, who then showed good footwork to halt play in time for his comrades to arrive in support.

share

26 mins: Gusto from inside the penalty area can't hit his first shot as he runs onto a deep cross from Neto. He had the time and space but slipped just as he attempted a sidefoot attempt.

share

25 minutes: Chelsea are camped in Newcastle territory. Palmer is in control and Madueke has plenty of space to shoot but is blocked. They're coming back. A cross narrowly evades Jackson, but Newcastle cannot escape. James and Gusto practically play in midfield, they are so advanced.

share

22 mins: Schar is cautioned for attacking Palmer. Then Neto shoots for the first time from the edge of the penalty area directly at Pope. At the moment it's all about Chelsea.

share

22 mins: You want to find a replay of that Chelsea goal just to see Palmer's pass. It could well be a contender for ball of the season. He won't get the assist, but it scored the goal.

share

20 minutes: Guimaraes finds Almiron with a smooth through ball forward towards the edge of the penalty area. Almiron makes a decent first touch, but his second is poor and the shot goes wide.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle (Jackson, 19)

No doubt this time! Brilliant from Chelsea. A wonderful ball from Palmer from deep in his own half, after fighting for space, finds Neto galloping down the left. Suddenly it was two against two and Neto played the perfect pass for Jackson in the middle of the penalty area and his finish was stiff and precise. Excellent counterattack from Chelsea.

18 minutes: Both sides live dangerously. Snachez's pass upfield is intercepted, but Isak failed to get his feet in time to score. Jackson is then given the freedom to run, but a late intervention reveals the danger.

share

16 minutes: Guimaraes goes down in the penalty area after breaking through a wall of blue shirts. He was told to stand up, but he looked convinced. He struggles to get back up and is met with boos. Oh, he was definitely circumcised, but it was out of frame. This means VAR cannot interfere. However, Newcastle would have taken the free kick.

share

15 minutes: Reece shoots into the corner, which he heads away with his head, but only enough for Neto to fire the first volley on the edge of the penalty area. That looked good, but was met with a solid block.

share

14 mins: Hall's in-swinger is too deep and Chelsea can handle it. But Newcastle are coming back with Barnes. Chelsea then counterattack and win their own corner as Neto's cross deflects off the byline.

share

13 mins: Joelinton was lively. A strong run down the right side earns his team a corner.

share

10 minutes: Chelsea's pressing works brilliantly and they push the ball back out of Newcastle's back four. But Joelinton returns the favor and launches a counterattack from Chelsea's half. They can't create a good chance – just a blast from distance that deflects safely to Sanchez – and there's a break as Fofan needs medical attention.

8 minutes: A huge disappointment for Newcastle, who are now happy with some time on the ball. But Chelsea pushes them and almost wins back in the final third.

Palmer's goal is canceled! He was off by a hair's breadth. It's a shame, this finish deserved a goal.

It's so tight. I think he might be just a little off.

NO GOAL! Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

So easy! And who else but Palmer. Jackson finds a perfect run from the inside left channel and is away. All he has to do is push it into the farthest corner, and he can do that with ease. Oh, but they check…. Was he offside? Yes, that was him! No goal!

3 minutes: Jackson catches the ball about halfway and makes a brilliant first touch as he turns away from his man and starts running upfield. A short pass to his right finds Madueke opening his body, but it's a tame shot and Pope saves.

share

1 minute: An early touch for Pope. A cross from Madueke on the right is blocked by the goalkeeper.

And here we go!

The players are out and Stamford Bridge looks beautiful!

Chelsea in royal blue, Newcastle in black and white striped jerseys.

This feels like a real Premier League fight!

Chelsea fans, what do you think of Nicolas Jackson?

A goal or two today could bring a few more doubters to his side. But another tough day, described as a “hesitant start” to the season, could put even more pressure on the youngster and force his manager to make a difficult decision going forward.

We received the first post of the day from Eric Peterson from across the Atlantic.

Good morning from Pittsburgh! I'm struggling through the most annoying weekend of my Premier League season: when the UK switches to daylight saving time and the US hasn't yet. This completely upsets my established Sunday rhythm of dovetailing the Premier League with the NFL. Annoying. Inevitably, this is accompanied by a nervous round of the sports links on this website, wondering why I can't find the damn link to early MBM – because it won't be posted online for another hour, Eric. Sigh. year after year. I never learn. The highest quality pranks, Halloween or otherwise, self-inflicted or not, are the unintentional ones.

Eric, we are one and the same. Coming from a country that doesn't observe daylight saving time, I still can't handle this ridiculous approach. I don't care if it helps farmers. It's making my head spin!

In news that will surprise absolutely no one, Roy Keane is backing Enzo Maresca to publicly denounce Reece James.

“What’s the problem with saying that?”

Jonathan Liew speaks to Marcel Desailly.

Does this need to be a hard sell?

Trust me, this is a real blast thanks to two legends in their field.

If you thought I wouldn't share this goal again, you were sorely mistaken.

An absolute worldie from 2012 from one of my favorite players in league history.

share

It was a week in which managers publicly bashed their players.

OK, maybe the blast is a little strong. But both Eddie Howe and Enzo Maresca have singled out great players and asked them to pull up their socks.

Maresca said he “expected more” from Reece James, adding that the Blues’ dressing room lacked a “real leader”. Yeowch!

Meanwhile, Howe told Alexander Isak to “focus on football” as the out-of-form Swedish striker was unsure about his future at the club.

With an average age of 23 years and 220 days, Chelsea's starting XI this season is the youngest in Premier League history.

They are currently ahead of David O'Leary's Leeds, who finished third in 2000 with an average age of 24 years and 162 days in the starting XI.

Newcastle team

There were also two changes at Newcastle compared to the last game.

They are both on the wings, with Jacob Murphy making way for Miguel Almiron on the left.

Big news on the right. Anthony Gordon is out with a groin injury and will be replaced by Harvey Barnes.

Newcastle: Pope; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Isak, Barnes.

Substitutes: Odysseas, Ruddy, Krafth, Osula, Murphy, Kelly, Willock, Longstaff, Miley.

preamble

On paper, this looks like a cracking competition. Two flawed but enterprising teams, both brimming with offensive talent and the ever-present risk of implosion. If you're neutral, this is exactly what you want for Sunday at 2pm under gorgeous blue skies in London.

Both Chelsea and Newcastle are also looking for redemption. The Blues lost 2-1 to Liverpool in their last league game, while the Mapgies suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Brighton.

Chelsea, currently seventh, could move (at least temporarily) into fourth place ahead of Arsenal. Newcastle have had a pretty chaotic start to the season and are desperately hoping for a point that would take them into the top half of the table. However, a loss could see them finish the weekend in 13th place.

To be honest, anything other than a Chelsea win would be a surprise. The Blues have not lost a home league game against Newcastle since 2012 and the visitors have struggled to score goals of late. But as the great F1 commentator Murray Walker famously quipped, anything can happen, and it usually does.

Kick-off at 2pm BST. Lineups and more news to follow.
