Cause of death for Wells Fargo worker found dead at desk

The cause of death has been announced for the Wells Fargo employee who was found dead at her desk four days after she arrived.

Denise Prudhomme, 60, was found dead by on-site security guards at a desk on the third floor of the company's Tempe, Arizona, office on Tuesday, August 20, according to a police statement previously obtained by PEOPLE.

Prudhomme had conducted a scan into the building around 7 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, “and there is no further scan in or out,” Tempe police said.

According to the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner, she died of “sudden cardiac death due to myocardial fibrosis,” which refers to scarring of the heart muscles. Her manner of death was reported as natural.

Cardiac death occurs when “the heart stops beating or does not beat adequately to maintain blood flow and life,” according to the National Library of Medicine.

In late August, Wells told Fargo USA today that Prudhomme was sitting in a “very underpopulated area” of the office when she died.

An unnamed employee said several people claimed to have smelled a “foul odor” in the office but “passed it off as faulty plumbing,” according to NBC affiliate KPNX. The building has 24-hour security, but most employees work remotely.

In their initial statement, Tempe police said “the preliminary investigation revealed no obvious signs of crime” in Prudhomme's death.

Following her death, Wells Fargo told PEOPLE in a statement that the company was “deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague.”

“Our thoughts are with their family and loved ones and we are in touch to ensure they are well supported during this difficult time,” their statement continued.

“We are committed to the safety and well-being of our workforce and are reviewing our own internal procedures following this event,” the company concluded. “Counselors are available to support any employees affected by this event.”

In the weeks following her death, a union representing Wells Fargo workers criticized the company for Prudhomme's “unnoticed death.”

Prudhomme, who worked as a business execution consultant in corporate banking, was “the only person on her team in Tempe,” according to the statement obtained by . The Arizona Republic and NBC affiliate KPNX.

“This may be one of the reasons why her desk was in an underpopulated area of the building and no one checked on her for four days,” the union continued, according to the media. “Wells Fargo monitors our every move and keystroke using electronic remote control technologies…Yet Denise remained at her desk unnoticed for four days.”

“The contradiction between electronic surveillance and an unnoticed death shines a light on the reality of what it means to be a Wells Fargo worker,” they added. (Prudhomme was not a member of the union at the time of her death, the union's organizing director confirmed to PEOPLE.)

When asked for comment on the union's statement at the time, Wells Fargo reiterated that they were “deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague” and told PEOPLE that any “employees with specific concerns” were encouraged to “share their feedback , as this is helpful. “We are building a stronger company.”
