Can Donald Trump run again in 2028?

Under the law, Trump would be constitutionally barred from running again in 2028 if he wins. The restriction has its roots in the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, which prohibits any president from serving more than two terms in office. This is also the case for non-consecutive terms.

Term Limits Rules

The 22nd Amendment was passed in 1951 in response to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's unprecedented four-year term in office. The amendment specifically states, “No person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice,” effectively limiting a president to two four-year terms, whether serving consecutively or non-consecutively.

If Trump wins the 2024 election, it would be his second and final term in office, having previously served from 2017 to 2021. As a result, he would be ineligible for re-election in 2028 under the provisions of the 22nd Amendment.
