Bundesliga: Leipzig wins at the top of the table

RB Leipzig wins against SC Freiburg and takes over the top of the Bundesliga table from Bayern. Stuttgart is shaking its way to victory against newly promoted Kiel, and St. Pauli remains without a goal in its own stadium. The eighth matchday of the Bundesliga at a glance.

After a catastrophic half, RB Leipzig turned the game around and stormed to the top of the table. With the 3-1 (0-1) win in the Bundesliga top game against SC Freiburg, the Saxons remain unbeaten after 18 games and are initially three points ahead of FC Bayern. But the Munich team can climb back to the top with a win on Sunday against bottom team VfL Bochum.

Ritsu Doan (15th minute) gave Breisgau the lead in front of 45,918 spectators before Willi Orban (47th) equalized. Lutsharel Geertruida (58th) turned the game around with his goal before Loïs Openda (79th) increased the score further.

After playmaker Freiburg coach Julian Schuster changed his starting lineup for the first time in four games, relying on Max Rosenfelder and Nicolas Höfler instead of Matthias Ginter and Maximilian Eggestein after the 3-1 win in Augsburg.

Leipzig had their first big chance through Benjamin Henrichs (9th), but instead of looking for a shot himself, he passed the ball inaccurately. Just seconds later, Openda failed to hit the free goal after an SC mistake. On the other side, Junior Adamu (11th) had the chance to take the lead, but pushed the ball past the RB goal on the left. This gave the party a lot of momentum.

After a Grifo cross to the far post, Henrichs is unable to clear the ball, behind which Doan (15th) heads in to give the visitors the lead. It was the first RB goal conceded by keeper Peter Gulacsi after 510 minutes. Nevertheless, it was a club record, as the Hungarian national goalkeeper's old record under Ralf Rangnick from 2018 was 500 minutes without conceding a goal.

With the restart, new signing Maarten Vandevoort suddenly found himself in the RB goal because Gulacsi had to pass while injured. “He felt something in his knee,” said RB sports director Rouven Schröder on Sky. The second half of the game started well for Leipzig, captain Orban (47th) tunneled the ball with his toe through Höfler after a cross from Henrichs and into the goal to equalize. That gave a boost. When Baumgartner makes the game quick with a spin and sends Openda steeply, he puts it across. Geertruida (58th), who stormed in from behind, scored his first goal in the RB jersey to make it 2-1.

On a counterattack, substitute André Silva sent Openda (79') steeply, who brilliantly prevailed against Rosenfelder and also went around the onrushing Atubolu before pushing in from an acute angle to make it 3-1.

VfB Stuttgart – Holstein Kiel 2:1

After the Champions League party at Juventus Turin, VfB Stuttgart is back on track in the Bundesliga. In the end, the runner-up defeated newcomer Holstein Kiel narrowly but deservedly 2:1 (1:0) and remains within sight of the top third of the table. Thanks to goals from Deniz Undav (19th minute) and El Bilal Touré (61st), coach Sebastian Hoeneß's team ended a series of three games without a win in the league. Kiel, which is stuck in the bottom of the table, is still waiting for the first Bundesliga victory in its club history. Armin Gigovic's goal (84') came too late.

After the 1-0 win in Turin, Hoeneß called for them to step up against Kiel and describe the game as the more important of the two. Because in the Bundesliga, another failure would have threatened the previous season's surprise team falling into the gray middle of the table. However, Stuttgart lost their defense chief Jeff Chabot with yellow-red due to unsportsmanlike behavior (66th) and had to play outnumbered for more than 20 minutes. But shortly before the end, Kiel's Fiete Arp also saw a yellow-red card after a foul (88th).

St. Pauli – VfL Wolfsburg 0-0

Fourth home game and again no goal for FC St. Pauli. The Hamburg team fought to a 0-0 draw against VfL Wolfsburg. A result that perfectly reflects what happened in the game.
