Broken candle resembling KKK hood now on eBay

play

Now appearing on eBay: A candle originally sold by Bath & Body Works, but which the retailer recently stopped selling due to complaints that the snowflake design on the label resembled Ku Klux Klan hoods.

The personal care and fragrance retailer recently apologized for making the three-wick “Snowed In” candle that was part of its holiday candle line.

The move came after online commentators criticized the design – intended to be a reference to a folded snowflake neckline – for resembling the white hoods of the white supremacist group. Some called it Klandle and KKKandle because the two holes cut out in the white, pointed snowflake tips looked like hoods.

Bath & Body Works apologizes over candle

Bath & Body Works apologized first to TMZ and later to other news outlets, including USA TODAY, saying the company was “working quickly to remove this article and is currently evaluating our process moving forward.”

Although the Snowed In candle has been removed from the market, some online orders have apparently been filled because the candle is showing up on eBay and other resale sites, with some listings well above the standard price of about $25 for the retailer's three-wick candles.

Online listings for Snowed In candles cost hundreds of dollars

An eBay listing asking $375 or the best offer says, “Both labels are in excellent condition!” Two other listings are asking for $255, with the candle's scent being vanilla and creamy butter mint is described.

A Facebook Marketplace listing listing the candle for $25 states: “This candle does not have the original 'offensive' label as seen in this ad. They only have the label on the bottom. These are never sold in stores, so get them now! I have many to sell if I'm interested in buying in bulk.

Social media is getting involved in the candle controversy

Some disagreed about whether or not Bath & Body Works' candle design resembled KKK hoods. But many understood the concerns.

“No, not a SINGLE person on her team said it looked “weird” or nothing? 😭,” one commenter posted on Instagram.

Others gave the candle manufacturer the benefit of the doubt. “I was wondering, what about the desi- oh. Oh no. I doubt it was intentional, but that's not a hill to die on either, so it has to go,” read another Instagram post.
