Brian Daboll: The run-heavy first half wasn't due to a lack of trust in Daniel Jones

Quarterback Daniel Jones' play has been a lightning rod throughout his time with the Giants and Sunday was no exception.

Jones was 4 of 6 for zero yards in the team's first half against the Commanders and also recorded a sack and lost a fumble on two other passing plays. The Giants ran the ball 21 times, accumulating 142 yards, but scored just seven points, while the Commanders found the end zone three times.

The Giants turned things around in the second half and had some success through the air, but they still lost 27-22, and head coach Brian Daboll was asked in his postgame press conference if the early game plan reflected a lack of confidence in the Giants attributable to quarterback.

“We ran the ball an average of seven yards,” Daboll said in a team transcript. “We felt comfortable. That was the plan that came into play. We wanted to run the ball and control the attack line. It has nothing to do with Daniel throwing it or not.”

Wide receiver Malik Nabers didn't have a catch in the first half of the game, and that seems to be a clear sign that the Giants' approach lacked balance on Sunday. Whatever the reason, it's something Daboll, who is 8-18 since the start of last season, needs to figure out.
