    We've been racing here since what feels like dawn – American fans feel short-changed by less than a dozen races on one card – but the Breeders' Cup races begin in about 20 minutes with the seven-furlong Filly & Mare Sprint.

    Hello from Del Mar Racetrack, 20 miles north of San Diego in Southern California: where “the turf meets the surf” and where too City of Troy will try to make history Breeders' Cup Classic later this afternoon, in the middle of the nine-race main card at the 2024 Breeders' Cup.

    When the gates open at around 9.41pm GMT we can look forward to the most intense and riveting two minutes of racing action this year and perhaps for many years to come as the Derby winner attempts to complete an unprecedented double with victory in America's most prestigious race and valuable breed for all ages.

    Fifteen horses from Aidan O'Brien's stable tried to win the classic, but none had the mix of pedigree, class and racing style that City Of Troy will bring to its first (and last) race on dirt today. Whether that's enough for 16th placeTh Time to be lucky is unclear, but Forever young, from Japan and wildness, The great, American-trained hopeful will be one of the toughest opponents who will want to exploit any reticence from offstage.

    City Of Troy's running of the Classic has always been the focus of today's action, but there are of course eight other races to consider, including four on the turf where European runners took a 3-3 finish on Friday .
