Big Ten Power Rankings after Week 9 of College Football

The Oregon Ducks won again this week, defeating the Illinois Fighting Illini 38-9 at Autzen Stadium, moving them to 8-0 on the season. The Ducks will most likely remain No. 1 in the country in Sunday's AP poll, and with a month to go until the postseason, they couldn't be in a better position.

Oregon scored on its first drive, and from then on it was just the Ducks. The halftime score was 35-3, with Oregon in full control. The second half was much slower, but the Ducks never lost control and pulled out a big win.

However, the Big Ten's other top teams didn't have the same stress-free weekend as Oregon. The Ohio State Buckeyes almost lost to the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Columbus, and Wisconsin took a big hit against Penn State. There have been some changes in the rankings, but the Ducks remain at the top, with some margin between them and the No. 2 team.

Here is our updated list after Week 9:

Alex Martin/Journal and Courier/USA TODAY NETWORK

Match result: Bye week

Previous ranking: 18

AP poll: Not classified

What's next?: Northwest

Analysis: Purdue received its bye this week, giving it additional time to recover from the loss Oregon dealt it last week. Purdue could win a few more games if it runs the ball well and Ryan Browne plays well, but there is no prayer for the postseason.

Match result: L 40-14 against Iowa

Previous ranking: 17

AP poll: Not rated

What's next?: at Purdue

Analysis: Northwestern lost everything it found two weeks ago and fell hard to Iowa this week. The Hawkeyes don't normally win on offense, but today they had success throughout the Northwest.

Match result: Bye week

Previous ranking: 16

AP poll: Not rated

What's next?: in Nebraska

Analysis: UCLA has this week off, and when it regroups it will look to build on what it found last week against Rutgers. These Bruins won't face each other most Saturdays, but if they have a strong bye week, they can finish the season strong.

Match result: L 31-17 against Indiana

Previous ranking: 15

AP poll: Not rated

What's next?: at USC

Analysis: Once again, Washington looked deflated. This week the Huskies took on the undefeated Indiana Hoosiers, but never competed. Washington needs to pick up two wins in four games to qualify for the bowl, and getting those two could be difficult.

Michigan quarterback Davis Warren (16) hands the ball to running back Donovan Edwards (7) against Texas in the second half at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, September 7, 2024.

Match result: S 24-17 vs. Michigan State

Previous ranking: 14

AP poll: Not classified

What's next?: Oregon

Analysis: Michigan got a much-needed win this week, beating its in-state rival. It could give the Wolverines some momentum next week against Oregon, but I don't think Michigan has a chance in this game.

Match result: N 48-23 against Minnesota

Previous ranking: 13

AP poll: Not rated

What's next?: Bye week

Analysis: Maryland has had some success this season, but overall it is not a great football team. They scored some late goals against Minnesota, but were far from the Golden Gophers on the field this week.

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Match result: L 42-20 against USC

Previous ranking: 12

AP poll: Not rated

What's next?: Bye week

Analysis: Both Rutgers and USC have been under fraud watch, but it was clear Friday that USC at least has Rutgers under control. After a great 4-0 start to the year, the Scarlet Knights have fallen apart and may have a tough time making it to bowl season.

Iowa State's Quinn Schulte (30) competes against Iowa State's Benjamin Brahmer (18) while Iowa's TJ Hall (2) during the Cy-Hawk game on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa , watching.

Match result: S 40-14 against Northwestern

Previous ranking: 11

AP poll: Not rated

What's next?: Wisconsin

Analysis: Iowa embarrassed Northwestern today and proved that at least it isn't at the bottom of the conference. They face Wisconsin next week in what will be a telling game for both teams.

Match result: N 24-17 against Michigan

Previous ranking: 10

AP poll: Not rated

What's next?: Indiana

Analysis: Michigan State's loss to Michigan is beyond disappointing, and not just because it came against a rival. The Spartans had a chance to establish themselves as an upper-middle-of-the-pack Big Ten team, but a loss to Michigan ruins it all.

Match result: S 42-20 vs. Rutgers

Previous ranking: 9

AP poll: Not classified

What's next?: in Washington

Analysis: After a series of tough losses and another disappointing start to the season, USC got a much-needed win against Rutgers. The quality of their opponents may not have been great this week, but the Trojans dominated Rutgers just like they should. This win puts USC back at .500 and could jump-start the Trojans heading into the final third of the season.

Match result: S 48-23 against Maryland

Previous ranking: 8

AP poll: Not rated

What's next?: in Illinois

Analysis: Minnesota's start to the season was poor, but it has done everything it's needed to since then. This week's win against Maryland was dominant and the Golden Gophers are now a dangerous team for any opponent.

Match result: N 21-17 against Ohio State

Previous ranking: 7

AP poll: Not classified

What's next?: UCLA

Analysis: Nebraska was embarrassed last week against Indiana, but this week they shined against Ohio State – despite losing. You don't get any trophies for almost winning, but a head-to-head matchup with a top-five team deserves recognition.

Match result: L 28-13 vs. Penn State

Previous ranking: 6

AP poll: Not classified

What's next?: in Iowa

Analysis: Wisconsin had a great first half against Penn State, but they couldn't sustain it. I still think the Badgers are a good team, but they are outside the upper echelons.

Ron Johnson-Imagn Images

Match result: L 38-9 against Oregon

Previous ranking: 7

AP poll: No. 20

What's next?: Minnesota

Analysis: Oregon exposed a lot of Illinois' problems this week, but the Fighting Illini are still a strong team. Their game against Minnesota next week will be a good matchup, but I prefer the Illini.

Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images

Match result: S 31-17 against Washington

Previous ranking: 5

AP poll: No. 13

What's next?: at Michigan State

Analysis: Indiana had one of their toughest matches this week, but they handled it with ease. The Hoosiers are the real deal and could compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Matthew O'Haren-Imagn Images

Match result: S 28-13 against Wisconsin

Pprevious ranking: 3

AP poll: No. 3

What's next?: Ohio State

Analysis: Penn State played with its food for a while against Wisconsin, but they took care of business in the second half. Next week will be their real test, but Penn State showed today that they are undefeated for a reason.

Ohio State Buckeyes running back James Peoples (20) runs for a touchdown during the second half of an NCAA Division I football game against the Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday at Ohio Stadium.

Match result: S 21-17 vs. Ohio State

Previous ranking: 2

AP poll: No. 4

What's next?: at Penn State

Analysis: Ohio State had a bad hangover during the Oregon/bye week and almost lost to Nebraska. They survived, but next week they face a difficult task in Happy Valley.
