Bernie Sanders criticizes the Democratic Party after Trump's victory: “Abandoned working class”

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., issued a scathing statement Wednesday setting fire to the Democratic Party after Vice President Kamala Harris lost the 2024 presidential election.

Senator Sanders, who caucuses with Democrats but remains a registered independent, accused the Democratic Party of turning its back on black and Latino working-class voters.

“While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change. And they are right,” wrote Senator Sanders.

Vice President Kamala Harris failed to build on President Joe Biden's support among Black and Latino voters who turned to President-elect Donald Trump in several battleground states. Senator Sanders claims the economic pressures these voters continue to face have caused them to become increasingly frustrated with the Democratic Party.

“While the super-rich are doing phenomenally well today, 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and we have more income and wealth inequality than ever before,” Senator Sanders wrote. “Incredibly, the real, inflation-adjusted weekly wages of the average American worker are actually lower today than they were 50 years ago.”

Senator Sanders further pointed out that the Israel-Hamas conflict, the lack of affordable healthcare and the threat of jobs being replaced by AI are three main reasons why American voters are dissatisfied with their federal government.

“Will the big money interests and well-paid consultants who control the Democratic Party learn real lessons from this disastrous campaign?” asked Senator Sanders.

He concluded his statement by alluding to “political discussions” in the coming weeks with “those of us who care about grassroots democracy and economic justice” and urged readers to “stay tuned.”
