Ben Kitnick's LET'S START A CULT (2024) – Film Review

Can you imagine being so annoying that a suicide cult excludes you from mass suicide? Well, that's exactly what happens to Chip in the beginning Let's start a cult.

After finding out that his fellow cult members have “ascended” without him, Chip's life loses meaning and he returns to his family home, where we find that Chip is somehow the least annoying member of his family. Then one night, Chip sees his former cult on the news after the discovery of their bodies and learns that the cult's leader, Bill, did not actually die along with everyone else. Chip decides to track him down and confront him about the fact that he was left behind, but instead teams up with Bill and together they begin recruiting members for a new cult.

After missing his cult's long-awaited ritual suicide, a disgusting loser teams up with his fake ex-messiah to rebuild their doomsday commune. As they travel together through Central America, the constantly bickering duo accept a would-be military man, a mentally unstable mother, and a mysterious foreign hitchhiker into their cult… But will this family of outcasts fulfill their transcendent destiny or decide that this life might be worth living? all?

Let's start a cult The film stars Stavros Halkias as Chip, Wes Haney as Bill, Eric Rahill as Tyler and Katy Fullan as Diane. There are also guest appearances from Ethan Suplee, Joe Pera, Tom Papas and CM Punk. The film was directed by Ben Kitnick and written by Kitnick, Haney and Halkias.

Based on the trailer, I expected it to be a hilarious film. While Let's start a cult I definitely had some great laugh out loud moments, other parts seemed to really drag on. I'll try not to give too much away as I look at what worked and what didn't.

I'll start with what I thought worked well Let's start a cult. First and foremost, the acting was great. From stars Stavros Halkias and Wes Haney to cameo actors Ethan Suplee and CM Punk, I felt like all the actors really brought their characters to life. And as for the characters, all the characters felt like real people. I can't say for sure if it's the writing or the acting, but it's probably a combination of both. There were also some pretty fantastic creative decisions, like depicting the “tracking issues” with the VHS tape recorded by the cult members, which might not make sense to a younger audience, but helped me feel a very distinctly '90s -years atmosphere to give to the film.

Well, some things I felt didn't work so well Let's start a cult. The biggest of these things for me was the logic of the story. I'm assuming that Bill started a suicide cult with the intent of cheating these people out of all their worldly possessions and then convincing them to kill themselves so that no witnesses and/or victims are left to point the finger could show him. So far everything makes sense. Buy, then why is he making this videotape and even going so far as to appear on this tape and declare himself the leader of this group? And why address the tape to a media personality and instruct Chip to mail the tape?

One might reasonably assume that Chip was expected to fail at this task since he had failed at all of the tasks previously assigned to him. But when Chip finds Bill, it's clear that he was hiding, believing that Chip had successfully sent the tape. This whole scheme doesn't make a single sense to me, but without it the entire plot of the film unfolds completely. If Bill had always intended to skip the suicide part of mass suicide, why would he want his name and face to be known? The whole movie honestly feels like a really long, unpleasant journey just to get to the obvious and oft-used idea that you should always stand by your friends.

My final verdict on this Let's start a cult Although the writing could be stronger, it's still far from the worst film I've ever seen. I would give it a full 3 out of 5 stars. The acting is great and there are some genuinely funny moments, but don't expect a masterpiece of theater. Although I might watch it again given the opportunity, I don't think I would pay for the privilege. If you want to check it out and form your own opinion, it will be released in select theaters starting Friday, October 25th and then hit streaming platforms on Tuesday, November 12th.
