Bears CB Tyrique Stevenson was responsible for defending Noah Brown on Hail Mary, coach Matt Eberflus says

Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson has apologized to his teammates after his costly mistake led to a last-second loss on Sunday. Bears coach Matt Eberflus told reporters Monday that Stevenson apologized during an early morning team meeting.

The Washington Commanders shocked Chicago with an 18-15 victory after successfully hitting a Hail Mary with no time left. Stevenson, who had been taunting the Washington fans when the ball was already in play, missed his coverage and accidentally threw the ball into the hands of Commander receiver Noah Brown.

According to Eberflus, Stevenson was the player assigned to defend Brown, but he was thrown off by a lack of concentration. Stevenson took full responsibility for his role in the loss when talking to his teammates, Eberflus said.

“It was a really good moment for him to do that, to show responsibility and accountability,” Eberflus said, via Chris Emma of 670 The Score.

Stevenson apologized on social media after the game, saying: “Notes taken, improvements will occur.”

Eberflus told reporters that the team would “evaluate” possible punishment for Stevenson, but plans for any disciplinary action would remain internal, according to WGN TV's Chris Boden.

One of Stevenson's teammates, Bears tight end Cole Kmet, also commented on the apology to reporters, saying Stevenson admitted on Boden that what he did was unacceptable and that the team appreciated his honesty.

The loss dropped the Bears to 4-3. Chicago has one more road game against the Arizona Cardinals before hosting three straight home games.
