Bear Beats: Episode 5, for competition until October 27th

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Bear Beats is a weekly publication published on Mondays to provide a review of the past week of action and a preview of the coming week's events. The fifth edition will feature volleyball, men's and women's soccer, soccer, men's and women's cross country, women's tennis, and men's and women's swimming and diving.

A look in the rearview mirror (events from October 21st to October 27th):

No. 1 Women's Football:

  • WashU began its final home weekend of the regular season with a decisive 3-0 win over No. 3 Carnegie Mellon (No. 2 in NPI) on Friday afternoon.
  • The Bears recognized Latine Heritage Month at the competition.

  • Second semester Sophie Viscovich took a long cross and placed it in the top left corner, which became the game winner in the 14th minuteTh Minute.
  • First year Olivia Clemons added two insurance goals in the 31st seasonst and 42nd Minutes to put the game out of reach.
  • Clemons leads the UAA with 16 goals scored.
  • In their final home game of the regular season, the Bears remained undefeated in UAA play with a 3-1 victory over Case Western Reserve.

  • Once again, WashU scored three goals in the first half with Junior Kaci Karl scored the winning goal in the fifth minute.
  • Junior Grace Ehlert scored a decisive goal in the 14th roundTh Minute. She is second in the UAA with 11 goals scored.

Men's football:

  • WashU opened its final home weekend of the regular season with a 0-0 tie against Carnegie Mellon on Friday night.

  • graduate Owen Culver and in the second year Colin Link Each had four of the Bears' 16 total shots.
  • WashU closed out the weekend with its second draw in three days with a final score of 1-1 against Case Western Reserve.
  • Before the game, the Bears honored the seniors Landon Green, Joseph Hipskind, Eugene HegerAnd Davin Hickman Chow together with doctoral students Jesus Tadeo, Cole HutsonAnd Owen Culver with a special ceremony before the competition with the Spartans.

  • After a scoreless first half, Green picked off a pass as a junior Nathan Szpakwho had taken a direct pass from a classmate Tyler Allredand scored a goal in the 78th minuteTh Minute.
  • The Spartans intercepted a pass in the 87th minuteTh minute near the goal and scored the equalizer that ended in a draw.

RV football:

  • WashU suffered a 27-20 setback at home against No. 25 Wheaton on Saturday as part of Military Appreciation Day.

  • Second semester Levi Moore completed 23 of his 38 pass attempts through the air for 219 yards and a touchdown.
  • senior Kenvorris Campbell Had a team-high 87 yards, including a touchdown.
  • Second semester Makael Carter led all WashU receivers with 87 yards and a touchdown.
  • senior Grant Purdy led the Bears with seven solo/total tackles). Junior Ryan Schmadtke and senior Riley Merrigan Each added six total tackles for WashU

No. 8 Volleyball:

  • The Bears traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the final UAA round robin of the season on Sunday, October 27 and picked up a pair of 3-2 wins over No. 15 Chicago and RV Carnegie Mellon.

  • Against the Maroons, the Bears won the first and fourth sets before closing the game 15-11 in the fifth.
  • graduate Lily Steinbach and Junior Anna Freeman Each had 11 kills to lead the Bears.
  • senior Zoe Foster set a new career high with 11 total blocks against the Maroons.
  • In their second game of the day against the host Tartans, WashU won the second set on extra points and the third 25-22.
  • In the deciding set, the Bears recovered from a four-point deficit to win the set 15-11 and win the game 3-2.
  • Second semester Leah Oyewole set a career high and tied the Bears' season high with 22 kills against CMU.

On the horizon:

No. 1 Women's Football:

  • WashU will play its final two regular season games on the road, beginning with a UAA contest at Rochester on Sunday, November 3rd.
  • Game time with the Yellowjackets is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET

  • WashU returns to Rochester, NY on Sunday, November 3rd for its final two regular season contests
  • The Bears take on the Yellowjackets starting at 1:30 p.m. ET.

RV football:

  • WashU is at home for the second weekend in a row on Saturday, November 2nd, taking on the Big Blue of Millikin in CCIW action.
  • The College Conference matchup of Illinois and Wisconsin is scheduled to begin at noon

  • A year ago, the Bears scored 28 first-half points en route to a 63-13 victory over the Big Blue in Decatur, Illinois.
  • WashU has won the last three meetings, outscoring Millikin 172-33 during that span.

No. 8 Volleyball:

  • The Bears will play their only contest of the week on the road when they travel to Bloomington, Illinois to take on the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan on Thursday, October 31st.

  • Last season, the Bears earned a 3-1 victory (25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18) over IWU at home in the Field House.

No. 18 Men's & No. 14 Women's Cross Country:

  • WashU begins its postseason run on Saturday, November 2nd when it competes in the 2024 UAA Championships.
  • The meetings will be held in Highland Park in Attleboro, Massachusetts and will be hosted by Brandeis.
  • The women's race begins with a start at 11 a.m. ET.
  • The men's race follows with a start at 12 p.m. ET.

Women's tennis:

  • WashU will complete the fall portion of its schedule when they compete in the Redbird Duals at Illinois State.
  • The event will take place on both Saturday and Sunday, November 2nd and 3rd.

No. 9 Men & No. 16 Women Swimming and Diving:

  • The Bears will travel for the first time in 2024 when they travel to face UAA opponent Chicago on Saturday, November 2nd.
  • Both duels begin at 1 p.m. at the Myers-McLoraine Pool.
