In a joint partnership between UEFA and Groupe Amaury, owner of France Football and L'Equipe, the 2024 Ballon d'Or will honor the best players, coaches and clubs of the year, as well as the best scorer, goalkeeper, youth player and humanitarian worker .

What is the Ballon d'Or?

Awarded annually by France Football since 1956, the Ballon d'Or® is the most prestigious award a football player can receive for outstanding achievements and exceptional talent.

Where and when does the Ballon d'Or ceremony take place?

The 68th edition of the awards ceremony will take place on Monday, October 28th at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. The ceremony begins at 8:45 p.m. CET.

How are the Ballon d'Or awards awarded?

The Ballon d'Or is awarded based on three main criteria:

1) Individual achievements, determined and impressive character
2) Team achievements and achievements
3) Class and fair play

The Ballon d'Or is awarded by an international jury of specialist journalists, consisting of one representative from each country, from the top 100 of the current FIFA rankings (before publication of the lists) for men and the top 50 for women.

Each judge selects ten players in descending order of performance from a list of 30 players drawn up by the editorial team of France Football, members of the editorial team of L'Équipe, and the best judge of the previous edition – Costa Rica – for the Balloon d' of men. Or South Africa for the women's Ballon d'Or – and UEFA ambassadors Luís Figo for the men's trophy and Nadine Kessler for the women's trophy.

The ten selected players receive 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point respectively. The Ballon d'Or is awarded to the player with the highest number of points. In the event of a tie, the players are separated by the number of first-place finishers. If the tie remains, they are separated by the number of runners-up, then by the number of third-place winners, and so on.

Can players keep their Ballon d'Or trophies?

An original trophy is produced each year for each existing category and all award winners keep their trophy. Since both Diego Maradona and Pelé were awarded honorary Ballon d'Or trophies throughout their football careers (as they were ineligible for the Ballon d'Or at the time), there are theoretically 69 official Ballon d'Or trophies, five Women's Ballon d'Or trophies, five Kopa trophies, five Yashin trophies, two Gerd Müller trophies and two Socrates awards circulated worldwide. All award winners can also request additional official replicas of their trophies.

France Football also keeps two original Ballon d'Or trophies in its offices for display purposes.

When did UEFA take part in the Ballon d'Or?

On November 3, 2023, UEFA and Groupe Amaury, owner of the media companies France Football and L'Équipe, announced a partnership to jointly organize the Ballon d'Or® from 2024. Together, UEFA and Groupe Amaury aim to strengthen the importance and global reach of the Ballon d'Or® awards while promoting a sense of unity and collaboration within the football community.

Under the agreement, Groupe Amaury will remain the owner of the Ballon d'Or® brand and will continue to oversee the voting system, which will remain unchanged and independent. UEFA contributes its football expertise, markets global commercial rights and organizes the annual awards gala.

As part of the agreement, two new awards were added to the program; Men's and Women's Coach of the Year Awards, recognizing coaches' invaluable contributions to on-field success.
