Bakery worker leads trailer into walk-in oven after Walmart tragedy in Halifax: 'There is no emergency stop switch'

A bakery worker has given an insight into how walk-in ovens work amid intense speculation about how a teenage Walmart employee became trapped inside.

Gursimran Kaur, 19, tragically died in a walk-in oven in the bakery department of the Walmart store where she worked with her mother in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Her death sparked widespread confusion about how she became trapped, and led many people to say they didn't even know walk-in ovens existed.

Now an anonymous American woman has shared a series of clips on TikTok that illustrate how walk-in ovens work and take her followers inside the steel box.

She said the videos were not filmed at a Walmart and clarified that she did not know which specific brand of oven was involved in the tragedy.

However, she said that in her experience, most walk-in ovens have similar characteristics.

“There is no emergency stop button in the ovens. “There is an emergency release button on the inside of the door, but the button is metal and pushing it would be extremely hot,” she said.

“I’m not sure about other companies, but we set our ovens to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.”

In her shop, she said, “The oven doesn't turn off when you open it, it stays on most of the day until we finish baking everything.”

The woman shared another video showing the dimensions of the oven, with a large rack on wheels pushed in that could hold 15 trays of baked goods.

Despite the shelf, there was still enough room for one person to climb in.

But the woman said there was little reason for a worker to ever go inside – especially if the oven was already on.

“We wouldn't clean the oven when it's on.” “The only other reason we would go into the oven would be to pick up parchment paper from the floor,” she said.

It is still unclear how Gursimran Kaur became trapped in the oven.

A dispatch call first reported by DailyMail.com earlier this week revealed it was from a “female employee.” locked in an oven in the bakery.'

“Oven is on.” “I'm not sure the staff has the ability to turn it off,” the dispatcher warned.

Kaur's mother, who worked at Walmart with her daughter, made the disturbing discovery after frantically searching the store for Kaur.

A colleague noticed “leakage” from the walk-in oven.

“Imagine the horror experienced by her mother – who opened the oven herself,” a family spokesperson said in a GoFundMe appeal.

“As you all know, her charred remains were found after a few hours in the bakery’s walk-in oven.”

Kaur's mother is reportedly “traumatized” by the discovery.

“The suffering of this family is unimaginable and indescribable,” the board of the Maritime Sikh Society said in the appeal.

Kaur is remembered as a “beautiful girl who came to Canada with big dreams.”

Walmart officials said in a statement: “We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and his family.” We extend our sincere condolences to those closest to them.

“We are also supporting our employees during this incredibly difficult time by providing 24/7 access to virtual care and offering on-site support, including grief counseling.”

Employees called into work this week will continue to be paid despite store closures. The shop will remain closed until further notice.
