Avalanche officially have their third goalie after Georgiev struggles again

The Colorado Avalanche officially have a third goalie to help the team after Alexandar Georgiev fell to 1-4 on the season on Monday night.

The Avs announced that Kaapo Kahkonen has completed his conditioning assignment with the Colorado Eagles and is expected to join the professional roster.

Georgiev conceded three goals against the Blackhawks on Monday, but all came in the first period and the Avs trailed 3-1. The players had to feel a “here we go again” mood and they were never able to get out of the hole. Chicago scored two unanswered goals and won the game 5-2.

Due to his poor record this season, Georgiev is conceding 4.62 goals per game and only has a save percentage of 0.822. Colorado helped Justus Annunen win four straight, but he got the night off against the Blackhawks because it was a back-to-back game.

What does this mean for the future? Well, Annunen is clearly the No. 1 goalie. That decision will likely be confirmed when he takes the ice against the Tampa Bay Lightning tomorrow night. But Kahkonen will give Georgiev some short-term competition and hopefully wake him up.

The problem is that Kahkonen didn't have big numbers last year. With the Sharks and Devils, he posted a combined record of 7-24-3 and a save percentage of .898 while allowing 3.64 goals against per game. The Avs claimed him off waivers from the Winnipeg Jets earlier this month.

In his two appearances with the Eagles, Kahkonen stopped 57 of 62 shots.

We'll see how this all plays out, but the Avalanche clearly have goaltending drama. It seems to be mostly at the backup position, but this is a conversation that no one expected Georgiev to have just a few weeks ago.
