Avalanche dodges a bullet with Makar; Setback for Landeskog? | Colorado avalanche

Good injury news for the Avalanche? In this economy?

That's been rare for Colorado this season, but apparently it can happen. Although Cale Makar was not among the participants in Wednesday's optional practice, he walked around the facility without a noticeable limp.

That was likely a sign that the Avalanche dodged a bullet, and Jared Bednar gave a relatively positive update on Makar before the team flew to Winnipeg for a game on Thursday.

Lehkonen gives Avalanche a boost, but Makar's injury lingers in win over Kraken

“He’s doing well,” Bednar said of his star defenseman. “He makes the trip. Want to see if he feels well enough to go (Thursday).”

This is a significantly better update than some of the ones Bednar has given this season. If Makar isn't feeling 100% on Thursday, the Avalanche won't hesitate to take him out of the lineup, although this isn't exactly the ideal time for them to be without their best defender.

The opponent, the Jets, have been the best team in the NHL so far this season. Things won't get any easier on Saturday when the Carolina Hurricanes, currently second to the Jets in scoring, visit Ball Arena.

Colorado will turn to Alexandar Georgiev against the Jets and hope he can turn their season around. Georgiev has conceded three or more goals in each of his six starts. Justus Annunen will back up Georgiev while Kaapo Kahkonen will remain in Denver.

Did Landeskog have a setback or not?

The situation surrounding Gabriel Landeskog is as clear as mud. Colorado's bench boss said on Altitude Radio on Wednesday that it “might be fair” to call Landeskog's current situation a setback, but he isn't quite ready to go there after practice.

“I don’t know if you can call it that,” he said. “I think there will be ups and downs as he goes through his rehab, especially now that he's getting better and getting closer. He pushes himself into different areas. I don’t think this is anything unexpected.”

Bednar went on to say that Landeskog will be back on the ice soon. The Avalanche placed their captain on long-term injury reserve just before the season, meaning his international goal is not currently in the books. If Lanskeskog actually returned and they activated him, some real maneuvering would have to be done to accommodate him again.

Considering he hasn't run in a while, they're probably a long way from having to make such a decision, if it even comes to that.
