At least five injured after heavy rains and tornadoes hit parts of Oklahoma

At least five people were injured after heavy rains and tornadoes struck Oklahoma from Saturday night into Sunday morning.

It's unclear how many tornadoes struck the state, but they left damage to several buildings, downed power lines, traffic lights and trees, according to the Oklahoma City Fire Department. A video shows that Newcastle Elementary School in the Oklahoma City area sustained extensive damage, including tiles falling off the building's facade.

Elsewhere in Oklahoma City, piles of debris, including wood and sheetrock, could be seen scattered around a community. According to the fire department, investigations are still underway to determine the full extent of the damage.

Five people were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, while several others received self-treatment, according to fire department spokesman Scott Douglas. It's not clear whether they were injured by the tornadoes or the heavy rains, but firefighters said they responded to several flooded vehicles.

Oklahoma and the rest of the central and southern Plains are not yet in the clear.

Severe weather is expected to continue through Sunday, “with the heaviest rainfall expected to impact central to eastern Oklahoma and portions of northwest Arkansas and southern Missouri,” according to a statement from the National Weather Service .

“Several rounds of severe thunderstorms are possible over portions of the Southern Plains from today through tonight,” the weather service's Storm Prediction Center said in an update. “Tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail are possible.”

By Monday evening, the severe weather threat will shift to Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, the Mid-Mississippi Valley and the Midwest.

According to Poweroutage.US, most of Oklahoma remains under a flood watch with the threat of heavy rains, and over 51,000 utility customers are without power as of 10:30 a.m. ET.
