Daichi Kamada's delightful second-half winner further eased the pressure on Oliver Glasner and ended Aston Villa's Carabao Cup title hopes.

Japanese midfielder Kamada didn't start the game but how he ended it, replacing injured goalscorer Eberechi Eze before scoring a magnificent winner in the 64th minute.

Villa boss Unai Emery took a gamble by making 10 changes to the side that played to a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday, with captain John McGinn the sole survivor.

Ultimately it backfired and Villa remain waiting for their first trophy since winning the League Cup in 1996.

Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara both made their first appearances since recovering from cruciate ligament injuries – the former making his first appearance in 445 days.

Mings in particular got through the game well, but Villa, who scored a first-half equalizer through Jhon Duran, ultimately had no answer to Kamada's first-class touch.

Glasner came under increasing criticism after Palace's terrible start to the season and made just three changes after Sunday's win against Tottenham – their first in the Premier League this season.

US goalkeeper Matt Turner made his debut and Palace took the lead in the eighth minute when Daniel Munoz delivered a dangerous cross from the right flank and Eze headed home powerfully.

The Englishman was forced off by a strike in the 18th minute and Villa increased the tempo before equalizing midway through the first half.

The ball fell invitingly to Duran in the 18-yard penalty area and he once again demonstrated his finishing skills with a cleverly executed left-footed shot that Turner was able to get a hand on but was unable to keep out.

Then Palace were dealt another blow when midfielder Adam Wharton was substituted in apparent discomfort as Villa began to turn the screw.

After the break, Duran hit a powerful shot which Turner parried away before firing narrowly wide just before the hour mark.

But in the 64th minute, Kamada took advantage of a bad pass from Diego Carlos.

The summer signing from Lazio acquired the ball about 25 meters from goal and created space to fire a low right-footed shot into the net.
