As the Mets' Sean Manaea dominates, the Dodgers manager is telling America something different

UPDATE: Sean Manaea picked up the win after pitching five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits, four walks and seven strikeouts.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has an opinion about Monday's Game 2 of the NL Championship Series against the New York Mets that belies the box score.

While Mets star Sean Manaea shut out the Dodgers in three innings — with one walk, two hits and six strikeouts — Roberts told viewers during his in-game interview that he sees a lot of good things. At the time of the interview, the Mets were leading 6-0.

“I actually think we hit some good shots,” Roberts said. “Freddie (Freeman) narrowly missed a home run in his first at-bat. (Manaea) seems to be making some good throws against Shohei (Ohtani). I I think Kike (Hernandez) sees it well. We just have to count up the pitch and hope we can get a hit and get back in this game.”

In three innings, Manaea had 45 pitches, including 28 strikes.

In the Freeman hit mentioned by Roberts, the first baseman hit a ball at 102.2 mph and the expected batting average was 0.30, according to Baseball Savant's Statcast. That was the Dodgers' only contact over 100 mph in three innings, with Max Muncy's 105.1 mph lineout in the second inning being the only unearned out; it had an xBA of .650.

Manaea entered the playoffs Monday with 12 innings pitched, three earned runs and 10 strikeouts.
