Arthur Smith on Justin Fields: Sometimes guys are too hard on themselves

A quarterback change appears to be imminent in Pittsburgh, and Justin Fields said Thursday that he doesn't think “I have that.” played well enough“because he couldn't prevent Russell Wilson from taking the job.

Wilson was expected to start before a calf injury sidelined him just before the first game of the regular season, and he gradually increased his workload as the Steelers started the season with a 4-2 record. Head coach Mike Tomlin opened the door to change on Tuesday and Wilson took over as first-team reps at practice, but offensive coordinator Arthur Smith didn't share Fields' view of how things played out.

Smith said, “Sometimes some guys are too hard on themselves,” and said he appreciated that about Fields because “for me, the mental component is what separates the greats from the other starters in this league, and that's what what he's aiming for.” Smith didn't confirm the change, but said Fields should focus on the positives from the first six weeks.

“You look at everything” Smith said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com. “I mean, you try to look from every angle, but that's why you have to have conversations.” No decision is ever easy. . . . If you become numb or numb you should probably get out of it, but I think confidence should be high. He’s 4-2, he’s been pretty productive and whatever Mike tells us, like I said, I prepared it either way and I just work and that’s my job.”

Assuming the Steelers do indeed make a move, Wilson will have his first chance to lead the offense on Sunday night against the Jets.
