Arteta: “You have to stand up and find solutions” | Interview | News

Given the razor-thin difference between the teams, Mikel Arteta lamented our lack of scoring opportunities in the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

In a game with few clear-cut chances, Alexander Isak scored the decisive goal to give the hosts the three points, and the coach was disappointed that our own efforts in the final third didn't create enough big chances for the Magpies to test Nick Pope in the hosts' goal.

“We are of course very frustrated and disappointed with the result,” he admitted after the game. “I think we started the game really well, we were on top and in one move we were 1-0 down after a brilliant cross and a great finish.

“I think the energy and momentum has changed. We got too caught up in the game they wanted to play and weren't good enough or consistent enough to get out of it. You look at the chances, possession and dominance and there is no difference between the teams.

“We probably needed to keep the upper hand, but the reality is that when we had the chance we didn't score and we didn't create enough danger consistently against an opponent who is doing a very good job.

“Defensively they are really good, when they are ahead in this result they take a completely different approach and we struggled to open them up. When we played the last pass, the quality of those shots and positions weren't good enough to really hurt them, and when we had three big chances, obviously we didn't score.”

Saliba: Now it's time to stick together

The result meant we suffered two consecutive league defeats for the first time since May 2022, but with massive away days in Milan and against Chelsea next week, the coach has helped his players recover quickly and move on to new challenges place.

We travel to Italy on Tuesday as the games are getting closer and Mikel believes he will see a reaction from his team as they have been able to bounce back from setbacks in recent years.

“Today we really have to cope with it because losing a game is always painful in this league,” he added. “It's painful, it has consequences and today we won't find the right words to describe it, but by Wednesday we really have to be ready.

“That’s the sport. You get knocked out, you find yourself in a difficult situation, you feel terrible and in a few hours you have to start getting up, finding solutions, working harder and committing to it.”
