Andrew Garfield leaves fans in tears as he talks to Elmo about missing his late mother

Andrew Garfield has spoken openly about missing his late mother following her death five years ago, while admitting that his grief helps him feel close to her.

The 41-year-old Spider-Man actor tragically lost his mother Lynn to pancreatic cancer in 2019 while filming The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

In an emotional conversation with Sesame Street's Elmo, Andrew said his grief over her loss was a “gift” as it reminded him of all their precious moments together.

“I’m just thinking about my mother today,” he said at the start of their conversation. “She passed away not too long ago and I just miss her so much.”

“Elmo always feels really bad when he misses someone,” Elmo said.

“Me too,” Andrew agreed, before adding, “But this sadness is kind of a gift.”

“In a way, it’s a nice feeling because it means you really love someone when you miss them.”

“When I miss my mother, I remember all the cuddles I got from her, all the hugs I got from her, and it makes me feel close to her in a strange way I miss her.”

He continued: “I am lucky to have all the memories of my mother and the joy she gave me, and the joy she gave my brother and my father, and everyone she ever met , to everyone who was around her.”

“When I miss her, I remember that she made me so happy. “So I can celebrate her and miss her at the same time.”

Fans admitted they burst into tears after watching the heartbreaking conversation between Andrew and Elmo.

“This can be very easily linked to missing my father,” said a fourth. “Memories of him pop up every day and I wish I had 60 seconds left to tell him how I was feeling or allow him to see his granddaughter for the first time.”

A fifth wrote: “I'm not crying at this Elmo video.”

Andrew was born in 1983 to parents Lynn and Richard Garfield.

Together they ran a small interior design business, while Lynn also worked as a teaching assistant at a kindergarten.

In an interview with Channel 4 in 2022, Andrew revealed that his mother's death caused him “precise agony” and told that he was unable to do “anything” for a while.

He explained: “It's very, very difficult, I think with a loss like that the world is reordered and I say that because I know I'm not the only one in this experience.”

“It's so strange because it feels very unique when it happens, when you feel like, oh my God, I'm the only person who's ever lost their mother, because it feels so lonely and precise.”

“It feels like real torture and for a while I didn’t want to and couldn’t do anything.”

“I was kind of wasted and the world didn't make sense and it still doesn't because I miss her a lot and I hope it never makes sense because I always want to miss her.”

It's been a busy week for Andrew, who is promoting his upcoming film We Live In Time, in which he stars alongside Florence Pugh.

In addition to stopping by to talk to Elmo, the recently single star also appeared on Amelia Dimoldenberg's Chicken Shop Date, much to the delight of fans around the world who were hoping for a romance.
