Reassessment of Onana overdue

Jose Mourinho had no doubt which player made the difference in his Fenerbahce side's 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Thursday. “Andre Onana made two fantastic saves,” he said. “He was the most crucial player in the result.”

The former United manager was of course referring to Onana's brilliant double save in the first half, when he saved two close-range headers from Youssef En-Nesyri in quick succession.

Such interventions are now common. The porosity of United's defense means Onana has had far more to do than he would have liked since arriving at the club. No goalkeeper has had to take more shots in the last two Premier League seasons. But his saves often kept them afloat.

According to Opta's expected goals model, Onana ranks third among goalkeepers, behind only Arijanet Muric and Emiliano Martinez. In terms of expected goals prevented since the start of last season, his saves are worth a whopping 7.14 goals based on the quality of chances presented.

Of course, it is his mistakes that stick in the memory, especially in the first few months at the club. The perception of Premier League viewers emerged early on. But his value has become clear to United fans and a wider reassessment is probably overdue.

Of course there were costly mistakes in the Champions League last year. However, according to Opta, Onana has only made two errors leading to shots in 46 games in the Premier League. That's half as many as Alisson and three fewer than Martinez since the start of last season.

His occasional missteps continue to draw criticism from critics. But his heroics on Thursday night were just the latest reminder that United would be worse off without him.

It's hard to blame Arteta for Nwaneri's minutes

Arsenal's injury problems and underwhelming performances against Bournemouth and Shakhtar Donetsk have added to calls for more opportunities for teenager Ethan Nwaneri. Mikel Arteta's perceived reticence has sparked criticism from some fans.

Looking at his guest appearances this season, it's easy to understand his desire to see more of him. Nwaneri boasts quick runs and smooth footwork and is clearly an exciting candidate. Within the club he is expected to have the humility and work ethic to match his talent.

Could Arteta have used him more against Bournemouth and Shakhtar? Probably. Even before William Saliba's red card, Arsenal looked sluggish at the Vitality Stadium. Nwaneri is probably the closest thing Arteta has to an alternative to Martin Odegaard in his squad.

But it still feels harsh to criticize the manager who made him the youngest player in Premier League history at 15 and 181 against Brentford in 2022 for a lack of opportunities.

Arteta said the historic performance at the Gtech Community Stadium was motivated by “gut feeling” at the time. In truth, it was more calculated than he let on; an attempt to show the club's most talented young player a route into the first team.

However, it inevitably came to the attention of the fans, who only saw him play in five more competitive professional games two years later.

It may not feel like much, but it's important to remember that Nwaneri only became old enough to sign a professional contract in March and is still five months away from his 18th birthday. He is the second youngest of 440 players to have played in the Premier League this season.

It's also worth noting that Nwaneri is ahead of other players with comparable potential at the same age. His total of five appearances in the Premier League already correspond to those of Manchester City's Phil Foden at the age of 18. Bukayo Saka, his fellow student at Arsenal's academy, only reached this milestone a month later after 18 years old.

Paul Merson says defeat against Liverpool on Sunday would effectively end Arsenal's title hopes

There is perhaps a wider question about Arteta's use of academy players. Saka is the only one currently forming his strongest team. But this scarcity is a natural consequence of rising standards. Arsenal have developed from top-four contenders to title challengers under his leadership.

It's a testament to Nwaneri's abilities that he already seems capable of moving forward. But overexposure at such a young age carries risks. And besides, at 17, it's more accurate to say he's ahead of schedule than he is being held back by his manager. His time will come.

The stalled Isak needs better service

Alexander Isak's 21 goals in the Premier League last season is behind only Erling Haaland and Cole Palmer, but he will be live in Newcastle's clash with Chelsea Sky Sports on Sunday after scoring just once in six games. He doesn't look like himself.

Sunday, October 27th, 1:00 p.m

Kick-off is at 2:00 p.m

However, the 25-year-old was hampered by a broken toe and missed three games before Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Brighton. But his one-on-one shot saved by Bart Verbruggen, one of seven non-goal shots in the game, seemed to sum up his recent problems.

In total this season there is one goal from 18 shots. The conversion rate, which was 27 percent last season and 20 percent the year before, has dropped to just six percent this season.

However, it should be noted that this one-on-one chance against Brighton was one of only two quality chances he had all season, according to Opta's expected goals model.

He converted Jacob Murphy's other pass over the goal to secure a 2-1 win against Tottenham in September. However, he has otherwise been limited to low-quality chances, his average of 0.42 non-penalty expected goals per 90 minutes down from 0.62 last season.

Of course, it is partly a striker's responsibility to create scoring opportunities. Isak has so far lacked his usual sharpness. But the responsibility for his goal problems should be shared. To return to last season's heights, better service is required.

Everton's Iliman Ndiaye This season was fun to watch. What is crucial for Sean Dyche is that the skilful striker also does serious defensive work. The 24-year-old had an unusual route to the top, as his former coach at non-league Boreham Wood detailed two years ago. He meets Fulham, live on Sky Sports on Saturday, in top form.
