American University's “Pray” sign is painted in red graffiti – NBC4 Washington

American University's main gate, signs and sidewalks were spray-painted with pro-Palestinian messages overnight, the university said Thursday.

The sign facing Massachusetts Avenue had the word “genocide” written in red spray paint above “American” on the American University sign.

Other phrases such as “Free Palestine” and “Divest Now” could be seen on signs along Massachusetts Avenue and on sidewalks.

Crews worked Thursday morning to remove the spray paint from the signs.

In a message, American University President Jonathan R. Alger said the graffiti “violates our policies, laws and values” and “hurts our community.”

“It creates distrust and discord when we try to build connections and common bonds,” Alger said. “Even on the most polarizing issues, where members of the university community may have strong disagreements, engagement must be constructive and legitimate.”

An American University student said there could have been a “right way” to do this.

“I just don’t think spray painting is the best way to go,” Celia said. “It's incredibly important to voice your opinion and I think if you do it right it can make a bigger difference.”

American University is looking at other entrances to see if they have been vandalized, and police are checking surveillance cameras.

“We are investigating the graffiti at Glover Gate in Australia. “Anyone found responsible for this crime will be held accountable,” Matt Bennett, vice president and chief communications officer at American University, said in a statement.

Anyone with information about the graffiti can contact University Police at 202-885-2999
